I am a fan of his work and aware of his evolution and at time´s lack of it, he is human.Mind you, Meisel's been evolving and building on his style and work for nearly 50 years. At this point in time, that's 46 years of consistent work without a single season's break. I think the man has paid his dues. And he is to this day the only photographer with consistently incredible studio photography, he knows what he's doing and that's why he stays booked, regardless of how repetitive it may seem. This might just be a continuation of his great studio work, but I have no doubts that it will be a flawless one indeed.
And I think it's very important to note the general state of the world and fashion as it is. I think the soul he brings to even his most commercial work nowadays is precisely the life he breathes into all of his studio works, which has long been his specialty. You can't deny that he has a very particular sense of style, lighting and pose when it comes to studio. And that works.
Like i said the issue lies with the creative direction and art director not doing anything different than a Zara ad by Meisel.
Meisel is a a gun for hire in this point much like at ZARA, but for high fashion your bring the best talents together to do something beyond.
Flawlessness great technical ability and signature are all great and valued but like i said, it does not absolve each produced work from critique when it lacks in this case of a distinctive story versus a Zara ad!!!!! that is focused on Meisel to give it a story, ok if it was an editorial on ALAIA but not as an AD for a brand that is short of 5 years trying to rebuild a new chapter post its founders passing.
Its empty!!! its the best way to describe this ad however fierce or flawless it might look on the surface.
