I thought that was her too!

Now why wasn't she one of the ones that came off the bus though? :innocent:

From her arrival in Britain as a political refugee to a brilliant career as a supermodel. A genuinely overwhelming enthusiasm characterises Alek Wek, a point of reference for many colleagues and for those who aspire to be. She has contributed to breaking down numerous barriers thought to be set in stone, winning by believing

Who is she
Born in 1977 in a small town called Wau in southern Sudan, she moves to Britain aged 14. She currently lives in Brooklyn, in the suburb of Fort Greene, which hosts important cultural institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA) and the Brooklyn Music Academy.

Career
When she had just turned 18 she was discovered one afternoon at the park, one of the few moments of escape that she allowed herself between school and looking after her numerous family. From that moment on her career has blossomed continuously, yet not without a few obstacles, but these have evidently made her stronger and even more determined. "I was immediately extremely happy to have the opportunity to work as a model, and I decided to give it all my creativity, to never appear the same in different photo features, but always offering an original interpretation". Her work with photographer Steven Meisel for the Black Issue of Vogue Italia is well known; from that experience she highlights the capacity to always work also at a human level with a staff in movement in a calm climate. Alek loves there to be music when she poses and often ends up dancing.

Has worked with
The major stylists, joining the Olympus of supermodels back in the late 1990s. She had made the covers of Vogue, I-D, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Arise Magazine. She has also appeared in music videos by Janet Jackson and Tina Turner.

Awards
In 1997 MTV proclaimed her Model of the Year and I-D magazine Model of the Decade.

Hobby
"I have always painted, it fills my soul".

Personal style
Mix and match is the imperative. She loves vintage clothes, colour contrasts and combining different pieces depending on her mood at the time. For going out every day she is faithful to jeans and top, maybe focusing on a particular pair of shoes. Or a print dress, and for the evening sandals or boots, depending on the coolness required by the situation.

Favourite shops

The Thistle & Clover Boutique in Brooklyn.

Favourite stylists
"I like to wear totally different brands together, such as Gaultier, Fendi, Ralph Lauren, or Zac Posen. I love Diane Von Furstenberg for how she dresses women, even of different ages, and how she makes them feel. I find her work very chic; she's an artist."

A special memory associated with her work
"I have been very lucky to work with talented designers" she says. Yet there have been many difficulties. For example, she could not accept the idea of not being able to work for Dior, an opinion that was widespread at the time. So she turned up once at the casting and insisted on trying on some items and having the possibility of interpreting them in her own way before receiving a refusal. Her joy was indescribable when her agent called her soon afterwards to say she had been chosen for the parade. "It was a collection in 1930s style; I wore elegant hats, fabulous jewels. It was fantastic. I love the work that John Galliano has succeeded in doing for a house of the calibre of Dior."

Other Projects

She has established her own brand of bags, Alek Wek 1933, a date associated with her memory of her father. She is also very active on the committees for the protection and development of rights in the south of Sudan, from where she fled following the civil war that is still devastating the region today.

Future

Some time ago she said she totally believes in marriage and wants to have children.

Strong points

Hair always short and natural. Long legs.

On her
If she had been on the cover of a magazine when I was growing up, perhaps I would have had a different conception of myself - Oprah Winfrey.
I have never seen anybody so interesting, so black and so beautiful - Steven Meisel.
