Hi,

I am putting together a comprehensive report on the business of fashion and that includes models who have influenced the industry. I have lots of information on the 80/early 90's girls (the supers) and the mid 90's girls (Kate/Amber/Shalom). I am looking for a a but more information on the girls who rose to prominence of the late 90's. From what I know the girls would include Carmen Kass, Angela Lindvall, Alek Wek, Maggie Rizer and Gisele Bundchen. I'm not sure if I would group someone like Carolyn Murphy in with the Amber generation or the Carmen generation. I'd love some feedback on if you think these girls fit this era along with a quick explanation of your feelings. I'll definitely credit you for your help and hopefully I can publish the entire report. If there are any girls after say Carolyn but before Karolina and Natalia to come of prominence, I'd love to know about them too.

You cannot not include the amazing Karen Elson and Kristen McMenamy when you speak of mid to late-90s top girls.

Erin O’Connor, Stella Tenant also come to mind... All such regal, distinct and strong faces.

Georgina Grenville (pictured in my avi), Natalia Semanova (and her awesome catwalk), Frankie Rayder, Liisa Winkler, Esther Cañadas, Audrey Marnay...

But Kristen McMenamy and Kirsty Hume are definitely more of Amber's generation.

Guinevere Van Seenus, Carolyn Murphy and Kirsten Owen are definitely of the second halve of the 90's.

^^^ Yes, how could I ever forget Guinevere...

Amber still reigned in the late 90s I would say.

MariaCarla Boscono started around that time. And Guinevere is the ultimate queen of the late 90s. Saskia maybe? Eve Salvail? Check Jil Sander campaigns, all the good girls did those. :)

I included Kristen and Stella with the Kate generation. Thank you for all the input so far. If you have to choose a top 6-8 who would they be? So far I was thinking

Gisele- started the Brazilian invasion
Carmen- very blue chip career
Angela- covergirl and campaign queen. MDC #1 model 1998, 2000-2001
Alek- changed the face of fashion and the perception of African beauty
Carolyn (if she fits this generation)- Model of the year 1998
Karen- Major cover girl of the time

Alek definitely was the first to usher in a new brand of beauty no doubt, but I don’t know if she is on the same level as the others, to be frank. Correct me if I’m wrong, but she was more exclusive to high fashion and her look never translated to a more commercial appeal. I would say Stacey Mackenzie was more versatile if you want include a black model.

The girls that became famous in the mid to late-90s are definitely ones with the most distinctive, non-conventional— and memorable ideals of beauty to me: They were more individuals with their own attitudes and more like muses. I don’t think such a unique one like Kristen would ever have had the opportunity had it not been the shift in fashion to a darker and more aggressive sensibility. She’s been around since the late-80s, but didn’t become the legend that she is now in high fashiondom if it weren’t for that more transgressivee, darker shift of the late-90s aestethic— of which she completely personified.

Karen Elson
Kristen McMenamy
Amber Valletta
Gisele Bundchen
Stella Tennant
Guinevere Van Seenus

These are the top 6 faces that define the mood, look and attitude of that period in fashion for me.

Erin Wasson? I first remember reading about her in a magazine article in Cosmo (Australian) on supermodels that included rising models, in the mid to late 90s.
