Team Evil

A posse of four, so named for its cheeky exploits, reunites in red leather and black. Blame it on Alexa Chung.

“We all met in 2006 — the year before my best year ever. Yep, 2007, nailed that year — was brilliant, really.”

Alexa Chung is talking, wearing a girlie Marc Jacobs dress and a boxy pair of Russell & Bromley men’s dress shoes. She claims to have been out all night — “Last night’s dress, last night’s shoes” — but looks so fresh and pretty that it’s hard to believe. She is explaining, over a hearty breakfast of eggs, avocado and coffee at the Smile, in New York’s East Village, how she met her favorite partners in crime: Kelly Osbourne and the girls from the band the Like, Tennessee Thomas and Z Berg. “That was the year I stopped modeling and started enjoying,” she says. “And making friends — I didn’t really have any. The Like was my audition interview for my first job, on ‘Popworld.’ And Kelly was there trying out, too.” Just like that, four single girls on the make became a posse. Girls, she says, who played like boys.

But posses outgrow themselves and girls become women. Four years on, Thomas and Z Berg have become well-known L.A. rock chicks, with an album produced by Mark Ronson. Kelly has finally outrun her rep from the “Osbournes” years and stars on the E! show “Fashion Police.” And Chung has become a major fashion “It” girl. (Karl Lagerfeld loves her; a handbag is named after her; Teen Vogue called her the new Kate Moss.) She designs for Madewell, has a new show on MTV UK, covered the Golden Globes for NBC and later this year will co-host “Thrift America” on PBS, sort of an “Antiques Roadshow” for fashion.

Chung is explaining this all when suddenly she catches something out of the corner of her eye. “You there, hey,” she yells with mock rudeness. The girl at the next table is clearly thrilled when Chung asks, “Those shoes are fantastic. Where from?”

The girl replies apologetically that they are vintage.

“Really,” Chung replies, a glimmer in her eyes, the gears turning.“You have to tell me where from.”
