Alexa is good friends (and ex girlfriend) of James/Jamie/??? (I always confuse him with the other guy in the band) Righton. Al is also friends with the band and to be fair, Klaxons are cool. lol.
But yeah, there's friendship going on.

Alexa Chung: 'I'd like to be a photographer, that was always my main goal'
TV presenter Alexa Chung is used to being in front of the camera but as a mentor for budding photographers in a new competition, she remains firmly behind the lens.

How did Vice Magazine/Ctrl.Alt.Shift’s photography competition arise, and what is its aim?

The collaboration came about because of the ongoing relationships Vice Magazine have with various charities and their desire to raise awareness among youngsters on some of the global issues which some people perhaps either aren’t aware of or aren’t particularly interested in because they don’t understand them fully. I felt particular compassion for this project because we were asked to explore power, poverty and gender – global issues which are on the top of Ctrl. Alt. Shift’s (youth-driven website and magazine) agenda.

Given the affluence of the country we live in, it’s easy to forget that there are still people in the world living in extreme poverty or women in certain countries still being discriminated against because of their sex. When we have Heat magazine and MTV to distract us, sometimes it’s easy to get to caught up in our own issues to remember the fundamental problems others face. The Vice Magazine/Ctrl.Alt.Shift competition aims to raise awareness of these issues.

How did you become involved?

I was asked by Andy (Capper, Vice Magazine’s editor) to take part in this project, I’ve known him for ages and have been taking pictures for years so I was excited to be approached.

What was it like working with the other mentors (Vice Magazine’s Andy Capper and Alex Sturrock and photographers Ben Rayner and Valerie Philips)? Any disagreements?

To be honest, I was so busy that I had to pick my favourites over email, which of course meant any potential disagreements were sidestepped. We had no face-to-face chats about which ones we liked, although that would’ve been great because I’ve admired Valerie Philip’s work for some time now.

You’re best known as a TV presenter but have modelled, you’re a columnist for a national newspaper and now it turns out you’re an accomplished photographer too. Which of these do you find most interesting?

I guess I enjoy them all but in different ways. I find my column most challenging because it’s weekly and I always worry I haven’t done anything interesting enough to write about! I find myself arranging to do things just so I have something to say. I never set out to become a TV presenter, I just particularly enjoyed Popworld (music programme, now cancelled, which Chung co-hosted from 2006 – 2007 on Channel 4) because of its irreverence, I certainly wouldn’t have auditioned for any other TV show at the time. When that ended I wasn’t sure I’d still be asked to present, but I was – and now I love it. Ultimately, I’d like to be a photographer, that was always my main goal. I started modelling because I loved fashion but the more I did it, the more I hated it and the more I wished I was the one taking the pictures. I like anything which facilitates the freedom to express yourself.

You’ve been on many Best Dressed lists (American Vogue named Chung one of the most stylish stars of 2008). Do you feel pressure to live up to that accolade?

I’ve always dressed to please myself rather than others. Although it’s nice to know that other people think you dress well, if I make a fashion faux-pas it doesn’t keep me awake at night. When it comes down to it, they’re just clothes, and everybody has a different opinion on what they think is cool. As long as I like what I wear, it doesn’t really matter.

Who are your favourite designers?

Phillip Lim, Luella, Chanel, Isabel Marant and Antipodium. I like how these designers make clothes you can get dirty in.
