Alexa Chung

I think scruffy hair is common for french women (e.g. Lou Doillon), but both American and British socialites look the same at the events. It's hard to say whether this or that girl a Brit or American.

I quite like the fact that her hair is a bit messy and not all dolled-up like most TV personalities you see on TV^_^

I feel like British celebrities are just as particular & polished about their hair, so I don't really get her point? Her American stereotypes are getting old.

I also get this vibe from her lately that she think she's cooler than everyone else, it's rather off-putting. Especially since her best style days were a few years ago, in my opinion.

Yeah, agreed. I don't know what she's talking about. There are massive amounts of british celebrities that are the same way. Her bitter taste for America is getting old.

^ ia. i really don't get the point of the article? i mean it's not like alexa, laura hollins, tennesse thomas etc aren't trying hard to look a certain way either..just cos they're trying hard to look like they aren't trying hard and leighton meester et al look like they're trying hard to look perfect whilst promoting something (but haha really why would you want to go on tv/to an event or whatever and not look your best when you know you're going to have cameras zooming in to every inch of you? most of the american celebrities i can think of aren't constantly being papped with perfect hair, perfect nails, perfect clothes etc) doesn't mean alexa's crowd is any better or less obsessed with what they look like than these "american celebrities" she's going on about. i live in nyc and maybe it's because i spend most of my time downtown but i never see a substantial amount of people with blow-drys..

plus obviously someone like scarlett j. is going to try to look perfect at an event, especially compared to someone like alexa, cos scarlett is a really well-known actress and has a bigger/more important career than alexa will ever have. scarlett has more to lose career-wise than does alexa and the media is more interested in her than they are alexa so why would scarlett want to turn up to an event looking like she just rolled out of bed when there will be hundreds of photographers there eager to sell pictures of her looking a hot mess? whereas the whole messy/look-how-little-i-seem-to-care thing is alexa's schtick so it's not a big deal for her. it doesn't have anything to do with british vs. american, just their different careers, different styles and different expectations/standards. i mean i personally like alexa's style more than someone like scarlett's on most days but i am so sick of the attitude that because she's trying hard to seem like she doesn't give a f*** about what she looks like it means she's somehow "better" than someone who takes the time to look polished and put together. and haha just a side note but nowdays when i think about someone who always looks polished and put together like a barbie or something cheryl cole is the first person that comes to mind...

^ London girls definitely have a different attitude towards hair and clothes than the majority of American girls do. Maybe not in NYC but comparing London to LA, it's pretty obvious.

LA is in no way indicitive of america..sweeping generalizations are never good! there is absolutely nothing wrong with taking pride in your appearance and if getting blow-drys and manicures and all that is going to make you feel better then by all means do so, it isn't hurting anyone else and frankly it isn't anyone else's business.

There was quite a long period of time where her hair looked incredibly greasy and it looked like she didn't shower between the events she attended!

^ yeah exactly, sorry but i'd take perfectly blown-out hair over hair that looks greasy, dirty and like you don't care enough about yourself to "indulge" in basic hygiene any day!

I didn't say it was a bad thing and I didn't say LA represented America, was just an example. :flower:

And anyway, she could have made the same argument for Southern girls vs. Northern girls as there seems to be a huge difference in how British girls look/dress (yes, sweeping generalisations again.)

Alexa isnt bitter. I think its obvious she is excited to be living and working in the US. But like anyone who has made a big move you miss things about your home and you keep comparing them. Its not about one being better than the other or anything and I think the article in question was pretty balanced. anyway its only a bit of fluff in vogue magazine

Obviously shes generalizing but I think there are, on the whole, differing attitudes towards personal maintenance here and in the US.
I would say British people are by nature kind of suspicious of anyone that looks too polished whereas Americans are perhaps the opposite.

anyway Im guilty of generalising about the UK too because my attitude to grooming [or lack of] is probably because I grew up in the south of England. Girls from London, Brighton etc tend to be fuss free and low maintenance but if you look at Liverpool its a whole other story.

ha...basically repeating what you said.

Personally...as a Brit living in the US...I don't think she's saying she's "better"...she's just mentioning the differences that do exist. For example...an American ex-boss of mine once gave me a hairdryer as a Christmas gift (another year it was an iron :p)...my air-dryed hair was obviously considered too "unkempt" for her tastes. None of my bosses in the UK ever did/said anything similar.

she bores me already with the whole "i dont like to be all perfect" it was cool 1 o 2 but shes ALWAYS sayin that. we get it, we get it you are pretty even tho you hate brushin yer hair. whatever. i bet she get up at 4 am just to wash her hair and then make it look perfectly unkept. the whole *im hipster and cool thing* is really annoying me. is too bad cause i really really like her.

I didn't really get the article either... I mean her hair is still styled blowdried whatever to a certain extent. I'm just wondering what she does to it when she washes it.. is it left natural or dried ^_^

That article is so annoying. There are plenty of American women both celebrity and not walking around with undone hair. It's not some new unheard of British phenomenon. And I don't get what's wrong with having neat, clean hair? Her notion of superiority because she doesn't comb her hair is obnoxious in light of her very self-consciously chosen designer wardrobe. there are people who would call her very pretentious for that reason since not everyone spends that kind of money to look stylish day-to-day.

Why can't people embrace differences instead of acting so superior?

Her legs are her best accessory. I loved what she had on "On" today. The mini black ballgown-ish dress with tights and rough-ankle boots!!! :p

I read the comments before the article, and was expecting something more ...explosive . The article is pretty light-hearted and balanced imo, Plum Skyes was quoted as saying attitudes like Alexa's are judgemental, a result of jealousy and reflect a worry of appearing self-indulgent . At the end of the piece, Alexa starts to take Skyes' advice on board. So the generalisations didn't bother me, but the talk of "scoffing" other people's desserts did. Really?!:innocent:

Oh, and Alexa makes no secret of the fact that she makes an effort with her "effortless" style.
