ONE was sizzling hot, the other icy cold - but both celebrities took the plunge into Cairns' underwater world.
Supermodel and actor Alyssa Sutherland dived headlong into the new year with a multi-day reef trip out of Cairns while American rapper Vanilla Ice told fans at his Saturday night concert he would also be hitting the Reef.
Sutherland slipped into town with her boyfriend, award-winning US TV commercial and short-film director Laurence Shanet and headed straight out for a diving trip at the outer reef.
The statuesque model, who scored a role in the hit movie The Devil Wears Prada after strutting her stuff from Melbourne to Milan for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Chanel and L'Oreal, said she and her partner took up diving one year ago.
But they had never been to the Great Barrier Reef.
"It's so beautiful, the coral is unlike coral I've seen anywhere else," said the 25-year-old beauty who came home to Brisbane for Christmas.
Vanilla Ice mixed up the action during his trip north, beginning with a concert at Brothers Leagues Club that one fan described as "fun, nostalgic and a tad weird".

* ALYSSA LIGHTS UP REEF
FORGET global warming, it was Alyssa Sutherland who was heating things up on the Great Barrier Reef this week. Confidential hears the supermodel began 2008 with a deep-sea diving expedition on the outer reef near Cairns. A natural wonder in her own right, the Aussie beauty and her American boyfriend Laurence Shanet became certified scuba divers in Hawaii just over a year ago. After scoring a role in the flick The Devil Wears Prada, the Chanel ``it'' girl hopes to do more acting this year.

Diving in to acting
GLAMOUR has out-sizzled global warming on the Great Barrier Reef this week.
Superbabe Alyssa Sutherland -- another natural wonder -- celebrated the dawning of 2008 with a few days of deep-sea diving on the outer reef off Cairns.
Waiting for her wetsuit to dry in her hotel room yesterday, the 25-year-old beauty from Brisneyland, right, told Qconfidential it was the first time she had dived on the reef.
``It's so beautiful. The coral is unlike coral I've seen anywhere else. We saw a few white-tipped reef sharks. We were quite close to one on one of our night dives.''
Alyssa and her boyfriend, award-winning American TV commercial and short film director Laurence Shanet, became certified scuba divers in Hawaii just over a year ago.
``I've become quickly addicted,'' said Alyssa, the latest Chanel ``It-girl''.
The couple -- who met while snowboarding in upstate New York two years ago -- spent a rainy Christmas with the supermodel's folks on Brisbane's northside before heading north.
``It rained so much but my parents were very strict with me and said I was only allowed to have a four-minute shower,'' she said.
Alyssa -- who scored a role in the hit movie The Devil Wears Prada -- told Qconfidential she plans to step off the world's catwalks more often in the future to get her teeth into acting.
``When I was young, I used to tell my mum that she had to get me on the TV but then modelling just sort of happened,'' she said. ``But I'm looking for something else to move on to and another challenge and acting really fits the bill and I have a lot of fun with it as well.''
