SHORT CUT - Vogue cover model Anja Rubik about her biggest test of courage
Anja Rubik enters the café through the backdoor, she doesn't want to be recognized. Her agenct already announced that she won't put her sunglasses down during the interview - that has nothing to do with prima donna behaviour: an allergy is the reason why her skin and eyes are reddend. This girl could wear 10 sunglasses and you could still recognize her because such a haircut only exists once in the whole world. Triple asymmetrical angled layers. On the left front long on the right really short, dyed light blond. It's raining outside which boost the chaos on her head. The 23-year-old was once asked by the British "Observer" what her bravest action has been. The answer is classic: "Cutting my long hair off". She did the right thing: The younger daughter of a veterinarian family from the Czech Republic is one of today's worldwide most booked models.
VOGUE: Are you satisfied with your hair today?
ANJA RUBIK: That's tricky. Short hair is harder to handle with and I don't like to care about my hairstyle.
Is there an explanation why you are in higher demand than ever with this hair cut?
No, not really. But my agent was sure that it would be the right decision. to try something new.
You already lived in Canada, Greece, South Africa, Poland and France and now in New York. Are there any languages you don't know?
For example I only know a bit of Spanish. What I really hate.
What did you do in Greece?
Stil at the times of communism the Greeks opened the land for Poland. That's why my parents fled from Poland to Greece - they were in high demand because they both are excellent veterinarians. I was really young when we lived there. It's easier to remember things from South Africa and Canada.
What did you learn from your parents? Can you heal an ill dog?
Depends. I would probably not operate. But I'm able to diagnose the dog: if his knees bend inside, the animal suffers from iron deficiency - very common in New York. Or the body's organs - I can often feel the problem.
Can you imagine to be a veterinarian one day?
No. I will study when I finish my current job but I prefer Arts over Medicine.
To be an artist?
Maybe. I draw in every free second. I'm working on portraits at the moment. But they are too bad yet to exhibit them. I feel a talent though. For my real dramjob - film reviewer - I don't have any talent because I'm notn good enough at writing.
What is your favourite movie at the moment?
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly was amazing. Unfortunately I was only able to watch it on my ipod during a flight.
