INSPIRATION can lie in the strangest of places - even a sequin and a biscuit can strike a chord, which is exactly what they did for design duo Antoni & Alison, otherwise known as Antoni Burakowski and Alison Roberts.
Today the duo returned to the London Fashion Week catwalk, having left in 2005 and preferring to show via more presentation-style set-ups (last season they opened up their studio and gave private tours as part of London's Open House initiative).
"It felt right to do this. We became interested in the catwalk again and the idea of girls walking up and down," Burakowski had explained before the show - which was aptly called Models Walking Up and Down in Dresses.
"We wanted to keep it really simple and show people what we do - no magic, get away from the 'quirk'," said Burakowski.
The simplicity played out through the wispy shifts, enabling the eye to be drawn to the sequin, brocade, paper bag and fringe collage creations that adorned them. A week earlier they had revealed four of them in only their collage state to show what they intended.
"You'll recognise them as soon as you see them on the catwalk," said Roberts, which was true. "We feel like we can make the dresses we always wanted."
"They reminded us that fashion is its own art form," said Vogue's Emma Elwick-Bates. "They brought together their signatures for a bright silk screen-printed collection."
This year marks the duo's 25th anniversary - and surely there's no better way to do so than by opening London Fashion Week.
