Happy to see her back a little, I was feeling nostalgic lately of the times were she was everywhere.

Don’t Call It a Comeback! Arizona Muse on Returning to the Runway
Spring 2017 may have marked Arizona Muse’s official return to the runway, but please, don’t call it a comeback. “In terms of doing shows, yes, it is a comeback, but the rest of my work has continued all along,” Muse writes in an email from Paris, after wrapping another stellar season. As one of the marquee models of the twenty-tens, Muse has spent the past few years living up to her prophetic surname: racking up luxury campaigns, covers of the American, British, Italian and French editions of Vogue, and beauty contracts along the way. And then three years ago she decided it was time for a change, and traded the rush of the catwalk for the comparative stability of editorial work. “I stepped back ever so slightly from my career and spent a lot of time with my son,” says Muse, who credits motherhood with motivating her ambitions. “From my experience, the industry has always been amenable to me as a mother. If anything, being a mother probably helped my career. It grounded me. Even though I was very young, I had great sense of purpose.”
This year, Muse felt ready for a return—but on her terms. The model spent the season reconnecting with the designers who had shaped her career from the beginning. There was an appearance at Prada, one of the brands that launched her initial success; an opening spot at Chanel’s data bank–themed collection; and a strut for friend Bouchra Jarrar’s runway debut at Lanvin. For Muse, each experience held special significance. “Doing Chanel the first time marked a great start to my career, and each of my subsequent walks for them was similarly exciting,” says Muse. “Working with Karl Lagerfeld again and opening this season’s show in the Grand Palais felt not just good, but grand, and a real milestone in my career.” Prada was similarly epic, “Miuccia is such an iconic designer. I feel very lucky to spend this time working with her,” says Muse. “Both my first show with Prada and the one this season were exclusive. This made each a really big deal [for me].”
Though she’s picked up right where she left off on the catwalk, in the intervening years, fashion has changed dramatically. For one thing, social media has often replaced runway stats as the key measure of relevance. Many models feel pressure to post every detail of their lives, but Muse’s perspective on the shift is pragmatic. “It depends on how much or little you choose to use it. It is an intrusive idea to photograph yourself doing everything,” says Muse. “For those who are comfortable, [social media] is a powerful platform for publicity. For those who like to remain more private with their personal life it can work against them, because by comparison, their accounts seem quite bland.” Oversharing may work for some, but Muse opts for maintaining a bit of mystique. “I would like to think that I manage to find a good balance between exposure and privacy.”
Even with all the changes, Muse couldn’t be happier to be back in the spotlight. “I’ve grown an enormous amount in the last few years,” says Muse, citing a renewed sense of perspective. With Spring 2017 wrapped and her son, Nikko, by her side, Muse is confident that the next chapter will be her best: “If I keep it this way I can safely say I thoroughly enjoy my career and look forward to many more years!”
WWDKarl Lagerfeld’s latest handbag design for Chanel — dubbed the Gabrielle — will be featured in a campaign fronted by Kristen Stewart, WWD has learned.
Chanel’s couturier, who also lenses the French brand’s fashion and eyewear advertising, has scheduled a shoot this week at an undisclosed location outside of Paris.
A face of Chanel makeup, Stewart has appeared in fashion campaigns for Chanel’s Métiers d’Art collections, and appeared in a movie Lagerfeld directed for his “Paris in Rome” effort in December 2015.
Lagerfeld also photographed Stewart for a handbag campaign in 2015 that also starred Vanessa Paradis and Alice Dellal. For those spots, Stewart posed with the iconic 11.12 handbag, and has proven to be something of a chameleon in her Chanel guise — ultrasophisticated one moment, sultry the next.
“She is a real personality. I don’t compare her to any other actress and she is really modern, whatever that means,” Lagerfeld said in an interview earlier this year. “And I think that she is perfect for the Chanel image of today.”
Stewart returned the compliment about the man on the other side of the camera.
“Karl directs photo shoots and always provides an environment for a story to unfold. And the way that occurs is very natural. But always under his guidance, which is felt and inspiring,” she said at the same time. “It’s never labor intensive because that is against the nature of spontaneous art.”
The Gabrielle bag, unveiled on Chanel’s spring runway, is one of those simple yet ingenious designs at which Lagerfeld excels. He got the idea from looking at virtual reality goggles and upending the shape. Cue a flat-bottomed, neo hobo with an ingenious double chain handle that straddles both shoulders for ease of carrying, and security.
The designer has been on a photography spree in recent weeks, capturing model Arizona Muse for Chanel’s spring fashion campaign and Lottie Moss, half-sister of Kate Moss, for Chanel’s next eyewear spots.

I Love The Shape Of Shirts... It’s really attractive on women to have a collar and square shoulders. I prefer silk ones to cotton because I like how they fall – something draped rather than structured is more flattering on me.
I’ve Cracked My Diet… I’ve found a really relaxed way of eating that suits me so well. I eat a bountiful amount of food, mostly protein, and that’s the key to my well-being, mood and energy level.
I Exercise At Home And Away… I try to see a personal trainer if I’m traveling because exercise isn’t universal, it changes in different countries, and I find that refreshing. And I love the atmosphere of a class – I work harder when I have competition!
Rosehip Oil Is Magic… It makes a huge difference to my skin. I put it on at night as a moisturizer, and in the morning my skin is plumper with even pores and less redness.
It’s Hard To Plan Ahead…Due to my job, so making sure that my son [Nikko, seven] has a routine in his life has been essential. My dinner time changes but his is always the same every day. And I don’t work on the weekends anymore – keeping that for family time is a life-changer.
