Artwork of the day #2

I actually do really like this painting, but the guy in the middle of the group in upper right with the blue cup is so scary... why did he paint him like that?? my fight or flight!!!

One of my favorites of his, too!

^ * Sunday useless post/hater alert!:

Some of her stuff is visually appealing and classes paid off cause she’s.. precise, but the way she shamelessly rips off Weyant with no acknowledgement whatsoever (when her paintings -more like illustrations- were completely different prior to Weyant breaking records at Sotheby’s).. and then chooses to reinterpret her work in the most vapid, humorless, ‘for ig’, trendy way, when there really is no need cause she has talent and clearly technique.. it’s like.. why?. It got to a point where I see her more as primarily a content creator with a painting hobbie as her main accessory/brand, you know the way other influencers swear they’re poets or actresses..?

And don’t get me started on the ‘difficult’ painting with the ribbons she did a couple years ago.. I don’t know why that triggers me lol, she’s such a cliché… 🎀insufferable🎀 would’ve been more accurate..

I confess when I first saw some of her stuff on my IG explore page maybe a year ago or so I thought it was Anna Weyant. So I won't even try to deny the influence. In fact, when I was picking which paintings to post in this thread, I left out ones (which I think are beautiful) that seemed a little too similar and chose 4 that I don't think are derivative of any Weyant paintings (at least not that I've seen). I didn't know she wasn't open about the inspiration, though. I tend to think of artists as either aspiring for greatness and/or social relevance or just wanting to be a working artist who can sell paintings. I don't think there's anything even remotely wrong with the latter, and maybe she is the latter. The talent/vision ratio favors talent. To me, what Meghann's art lacks in originality it makes up for in execution. And also they're so pretty! And to me... evocative? They also lack the weirdness of Weyant - not a criticism of Weyant at all, btw. I also don't follow any of these people on a personal level, my enjoyment is purely visual. Does Weyant credit Currin as an influence? Probably. Are all artists constantly borrowing/stealing from one another? Isn't that (on a superficial level) why there are "eras" in art? Thousands of incredibly talented artists throughout history were just doing what was trending and trying to make a buck. I took one semester of art history in high school and another in college, so... kinda ignorant if I'm being real.

Also, I had to google her previous work (prior to 2023) because it seemed to be scrubbed from the 'net! Looks like she was more of an illustrator-for-hire, with a kind of generic (but sometimes pretty!) visual style. I would never have thought the same artist made these two:

^ Yes!

I remember seeing the silver flats painting for the first time and thinking it was a Weyant but more sugary, less weird like you said, but still.. beautiful work! then I saw the rest and was like ‘wait a minute…’

I’ve seen Anna talking about Currin at least twice, whereas this girl seemed to have Anna blocked at one point (a friend figured it out- I’m not sure how or if it’s reliable and not sure if it’s still happening) and certainly would delete/block people who mentioned similarities. So weird but I’ve met girls like her before: your fan… who also wishes you weren’t around. 😶
