FRENCH FLAIR. Classically handsome Aurelien Muller was scouted on his first day working in the fashion capital of Paris. Here’s what happened next
While many would’ve jumped at the chance of becoming a professional model without a second thought, Aurelien Muller took a more considered approach. He sensibly chose to complete his studies first, before embarking on what he suspected could be a bit of an adventure. His suspicions proved well founded, and since that moment the now New York-based model’s career has gone from strength to strength. After already working with some of the industry’s best, the Frenchman has certainly proved that he is one to watch. DA MAN: Aurelien, when did it all start for you? Aurelien Muller: Well, I got scouted on my first day in Paris while walking across town to work during an internship three and a half years ago. But, I chose to get my degree first and work as an engineer before I eventually decided to sign a full time deal with the agency that first scouted me in February 2013. By that point, I was ready for an adventure!
DA: Has it been difficult to adapt to life in the fashion industry? AR: Not really, simply because I really enjoy how fast everything moves. I love it because you have no routine. You don’t know where you will be next week or what you will be doing tomorrow until the very last minute. DA: What lifestyle changes have you had to make since you started modeling? AR: When I started modeling I was just too big to fit into any of the clothes, so I lost some good jobs and shows because of that. Consequently, I started to do a lot of cardio and have become much more focused on my diet.
DA: What’s keeping you busy at the moment? AR: These days, New York Fashion Week castings have been taking up a lot of my time. Besides that, working out once or twice a day is a good way to stay busy! DA: Who is your favorite fashion designer? AR: If I’m only allowed to choose one, I think I would have to go for Dolce & Gabbana. I love the suits—very classy and sophisticated. -
DA: Do you have a favorite photographer? AR: My favorite photographer is Mario Testino because, beyond his amazing career success, he is still very down to earth. I recently had the chance to meet and get to know him better, which was a real privilege. He was very humble, very funny, and very nice! DA: What has been your best career moment so far? AR: Doing the cover for V Magazine: shooting with Joan Smalls by Mario Testino under the Miami sun for the cover of one of the most iconic magazines in the fashion industry … What else could you hope for? DA: What would be your dream campaign? AR: I’m still yet to book a major fragrance campaign, so that’s that! DA: If you weren’t a model, what profession would you be in? AR: This is a simple question for me to answer. I would return to my previous career where I was working as an engineer headhunter, placing a team of 15 to 20 engineers into jobs.
DA: Is there a male model you aspire to be like? AR: David Gandy, because he is the best male model in the world. And he is also the face of Dolce & Gabbana, a position I’d love to take over! [Laughs] DA: What is your goal in life? AR: To have no regrets and when I am 60, to still have a smile on my face.
DA: What’s your favorite city in the world? AR: New York or Paris … I love New York because it’s where my career really took off and because it has so much energy; Paris because of the romance and amazing scenery that the city has. DA: What are three things that most people don’t know about you? AR: I am a vegan; I have a twin brother; and I grew up and worked at my dad’s farm during every summer until this year.
