what do you think about the rise of Austrian avant garde designers? I don't really know very much about the Austrian culture, but Vienna seems like an artistic city, while the rest of the country is mroe conservative (?).

Not a big fan, I must say. From whatever Space posted, the design element is definitely there, but it lacks that wearibility element that is always found along with the design element in the Belgians, for example. From what I've examined in stores, it lacks quality as well. But it's a start. I think Austria is poised for a fashion boom of some sort, since there is a huge culture gap between the old and the young generation + someone to look up too (Helmut Lang, and CCP) + a good fashion programm in Vienna.

don't really like it either, i wouldn't wear any of the outfits posted, to be honest.
it all appears rather dilettantish to me......

Claudia Rosa Lukas(my friend)might change your mind,Faust. She's really good. And frankly she,Hartmann and Eva Blut are my favorites.

I like Claudia Rosa's latest and most of Hartmann's work, thanks for the Austrian round up space & scott

thanks for the pictures, spacemiu and scott!

i quite like most of this. but it's the general mood in it that i like rather than finding individual pieces really outstanding (while some of course are...) vienna is a very interesting and moving city and in general i think that 'austrian creativity' emerges from the suspense of tradition/conservation and modernity, i have a feeling that austria's artists have a very political way of touching things even because the country's government and history are as conservative...

That's quite true,Anna. Case in point: Fabrics Interseason. They're always playing round with a political aesthetic. And I think the conservatism allows them to speak and rebell themselves through their work. I've heard some things about the government there that they were trying to banish fashion design from the schools claiming it isn't a form of art and shouldn't be taught as such. Or something of that magnitude. Terribly appalling, for certain.

indeed, much better :flower:

I thought Wendy & Jim was usually more commercial? Anyway, I think I like the collection names more than I like the clothes.

Faust,I'm seeing her in Paris and I'll have pics here after...I'm really looking forward too as it's been three years in the making to meet her.

saraphelle, they're about as post-modern avant-garde as they come...

You're welcome,Travolta.

not a Wendy&Jim fan here ...

scott, great to know you will meet her in Paris

claudia's collection looks really good...:flower:

thx for the pictures scott...

I hope our most fashionable Austrian tfs member _Astrid_ will shed some light on it :heart:
from this thread I love Claudia Rosa Lukas' work but Wendy & Jim is too out there for me.
