MANILA, Philippines—In the early ’50s, a widely circulated Hollywood magazine gathered a select panel of photographers, cinematographers and makeup artists to choose Tinseltown’s “Most Beautiful Actresses.”

Using bone structure, coloring, photogenic qualities and versatility of looks as criteria, the grand winner turned out to be Ava Gardner.

Not long after Ava was cast in “The Barefoot Contessa,” studio publicists who wanted to reinforce the actress’ position as Hollywood’s Most Beautiful thought up another title for her: “The World’s Most Beautiful Animal”—a title that left no doubt that the gorgeous Ava reigned supreme even over, uh, elephants, peacocks and rhinoceroses!

Oh wow script. I love the pics from post 3321, especially the first one. I really love how the camera captured the look of her neck and shoulders.

Why is the shape of your eyebrows important?

Throughout time, we have admired beautiful women for their characteristic eyebrows. The exclusive list includes Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor, Vanessa Williams, Cindy Crawford and Brooke Shields. Ava Gardner had a natural arch to her brows that many clients try to emulate. Our threading salon in Dublin makes it easy for you to keep looking beautiful.

In modern times, notions of what is deemed beautiful have also been turned on their heads time and again, and these changes can be viewed through the prism of the modelling industry, that great litmus test of what's popularly -- or, at least, commercially -- deemed beautiful at any given time.

"If you look at the 1930s and '40s, the great beauties were Hollywood stars like Ava Gardner and all those magnificent, glamorous, curvy women," explains Limerick-based model scout Celia Holman Lee. "In the 50s, natural blondes were dying their hair dark to emulate the raven tresses of Ava."

This evening ensemble, worn originally by the eternally elegant Ava Gardner, shows Balenciaga's talent for cutting clothes in dramatic, sculpted shapes. These minimalist garments resemble the religious vestments of the Spanish Catholic Church. The only decoration is the artificial flowers at the hem of the dress and the collar of the cape. Gazar is a thick silk fabric with a stiff finish, specially created for Balenciaga by the textile firm Abraham of Switzerland.

From 1956, Balenciaga refused to show his clothes publicly at the same time as the other Parisian couturiers. This was because his designs were inevitably copied before he had finished making them up for his private clients. This dress and cape contain the 'Eisa' label, the Spanish branch of the House of Balenciaga, named after the designer's mother. Ava is said to have worn the outfit it only once, to a movie premiere.

The Age

Ungaro sent out shimmering cocktail dresses and sparkling evening gowns fit for Ava Gardner. Unfortunately, the models who wore the dresses did not evoke the glamour and sultriness Gardner was known for, but it was easy to imagine Ava wearing the dresses.
