Back in the heady days of Hollywood every film star wore evening gloves. And the longer they were, the naughtier – Ava Gardner’s most famous glamour shot has her in a black strapless number, her long gloves just that little bit too little loose at the top. Those gloves and the slinky black dress that Ava wore with him define the style of film noir.

Jacques Fath dressed many of the most glamorous women of the 50's, such as Rita Hayworth in her movies (Gilda) and later he made her wedding dress and trousseau when she married the Agha Khan. Jacques Fath also dressed other Hollywood stars such as Ava Gardner, Greta Garbo. Ava was somewhat an aficionando of couture, frequenting the salons of Dior and Balenciaga.

Immodesty Blaize: Sex, scandal and naked ambition

Britain’s most celebrated burlesque performer is bidding to become the next Jackie Collins. She talks to John Walsh about her first novel, ‘Tease’, a lightly veiled account of her own difficult childhood

"My mother looked like Wonder Woman. She had big hair and boobs like mine, very vixen-like and feminine. I suppose that's why I'm drawn to very high-glamour women, from Ava Gardner to Sophia Loren and Racquel Welch, that kind of spilling-out-of-your-blouse style. Ava in particular has been a real discovery for me-the red lipstick, the dark hair. Perfection."

Spanish Jewellery House Honors Ava Gardner
Tue, 12 May 2009, 00:00 EST

Carrera Y Carrera, a world-renowned diamond jewellery house in Spain, is opening a boutique in Dubai. Their grand opening will feature works from three collections designed as a tribute to the work of late Hollywood actress Ava Gardner. Although Gardner was American, she spent some time after her 3rd marriage (to Frank Sinatra) in Spain, becoming friends with Ernest Hemingway. Through this friendship, she discovered a love for bullfighting, and for one bullfighter in particular, Luis Miguel Dominguin. She later said of that time, “It was a sort of madness, honey”, using the charming and seductive tone that made her so popular as an actress.

Using a combination of 18 carat gold and 10 carat diamonds, the handmade jewellery pieces exemplify Spanish passion. According to Nathalie Guedj, CEO of Carrera Y Carrea, “This trio of collections—Sol y Sombra, Te Quiero and Ava draw inspiration from Ava Gardner…the quintessence of feminine beauty and of her love affair with Spain.” Gardner, who lived in Madrid for several years in the 1950s, influenced the collection and its theme of “Love of Life”.

The Ava Collection includes a necklace of white and yellow gold with diamonds designed in a crescent shape and holding a circular pendant. The white gold arch is encrusted with pave diamonds, and the yellow gold is decorated with a delicate floral motif. This piece has a matching set of reversible hoop earrings, one in white gold and the other in yellow gold, and a matching bracelet as well. A set of white gold rings are also included in this collection, in Carrera Y Carrera’s well-known sun motif, studded with rose and white brilliant-cut diamonds. The sun motif carries to reversible white gold pendants strung on double chains.

The Sol y Sombra collection is intended to capture the mood of the afternoon sun in a bullfighting ring. The signature sun motif recurs here on rings and pendants in white and yellow gold studded with diamonds. This more casual collection is designed for everyday wear.

Te Quiero features Carrera Y Carrera’s ‘giraffe’ motif. It is meant to express Gardner’s sweetness and love of life. Included in the collection are rings of white and yellow gold with diamonds and smoked quartz, and necklaces and bracelets of yellow gold and diamonds. This collection is designed for the young, or young at heart.

Carrera Y Carrera first introduced these collections in 2007, but is using them as their masterpieces to launch the new boutique in Dubai.

Following hard on Linda Darnell's heels was the unbelievable Ava Gardner who had this inexplicable ability to raise just one eyebrow quizzically while the other remained stationary. It drove men wild. It drove us wild too as we practised, pracitsed and practised to do likewise. We were a facial contortionist's nightmare. We all wanted to be like Ava Gardner.

WHETHER fake or farm-raised, fur makes a fashionable fall accessory. But this season the trendiest fluff is not the trim on coats or handbags. Autumn’s most prized pelt is the hairy eyebrow.

“On both coasts, everybody wants a thicker brow that reminds you of Elizabeth Taylor and Ava Gardner,” said Robyn Cosio, an eyebrow stylist who works at the Salon by Maxime in Beverly Hills and Eiji salon in Manhattan. “People love that I leave the two bottom layers of undergrowth and don’t take out so much in between the brows so that they can stick up and look feathered. Ava's eyebrows framed her perfectly unusual features perfectly."
