Later my father’s friend Session Judge of Lahore late Mr. Riaz Qureshi was photographed in a white dinner jacket and a bow tie at a dinner in honour of Ava Gardner where Ava looked dazzling in a sari. This photograph adorned the wall of the Ava Gardner Suite at the Faletti’s hotel during the shooting of Bhowani Junction. Ava Gardner went bare footed to the Regal Cinema on the Mall to see her movie “The Barefoot Contessa” with Minoo Bhandara and others.

Zang Toi, a Malaysian-born designer now living in New York,took his springtime inspiration from the Far East, with clothes out of some bygone movie of British colonial Asia.

First, there was a cool Grace Kelly on safari: a bush jacket over a flirty bustier dress, or an alligator Jacquard jacket and skirt, worn with matching Kelly bag and sling-back shoes. Then there was steamy Ava Gardner: a tomato-red trench coat, with laced back and sleeves, over a blue tropical-paradise print blazer and bra.

Temperley: London-based designer Alice Temperley named her dresses and daywear for Hollywood screen sirens of the 1940s and she successfully recreated the glamour of the era.

The black Olivia de Havilland dress and a jacket with sequins around the collar would be a welcome addition to the red carpet anytime, as would the ocean-blue Ava Gardner gown, with its gathered bust and V straps. A leather jacket named for Vivien Leigh had quilting on the cuffs and around the waist and was very chic.
