For both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the only speech they really need to rehearse for Sunday's Oscars is what to say when they run into his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston. After all, both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are ranked by Gold Derby fourth in their respective lead races for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" and "Changeling."
And the track record of couples both nominated for Oscars in the same year is not great. Of the 11 couples profiled below, only one — Frances McDormand and Joel Coen — both won on the same night. In four other derby years, the woman won while, in one instance, it was the man. And for the five others — including the most recent pairing of Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams in 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" — both of them lost.
In 1953 Ava Gardner successfully petitioned Columbia studio head Harry Cohn to cast her husband Frank Sinatra in "From Here to Eternity." While he won the supporting actor award she lost her only lead actress bid for "Mogambo" to Audrey Hepburn ("Roman Holiday"). Sinatra went on to earn one lead nod and was awarded the Hersholt humanitarian Oscar in 1970.

Like a jaguar on the prowl, the morning sun creeps out from a thicket of clouds and stretches itself resplendently across the sky. I hardly care, huddled in the sand under two blankets, shivering with headache, fever and chills. First day on vacation and I've brought a respiratory virus from home.

Lonely Planet guide to Mexico "It's better to be sick on a beach in Mexico than at work at home," my wife Laurie says, failing to cheer me up. I'm miserable and churlish, unashamed to grouch about barking dogs, a fat guy in a Speedo and the noise of the pounding surf. "Doesn't the sea ever shut up?" I rail.
Back to Travel index page We are staying at Mar de Jade ("Sea of Jade"), a hotel in a jungle by an ocean. Hotel isn't quite the right word because this isn't a resort or highrise. The lodge consists of several two-storey buildings with guest rooms and a Mediterranean-style house with a red-tiled roof.
Brightened by bougainvillaea and banana trees, Mar de Jade is postcard-pretty, but I'm more intrigued by its hidden-in-the-tropics mood of sanctuary reminiscent of the Costa Verde, the jungle outpost in John Huston's The Night of the Iguana. The lodge's owner Laura del Valle reminds me of Maxine, the film's hotelkeeper played by Ava Gardner, who exuded earth-mothering, middle-aged sexiness.

Such a fool!
Such a bumbling, incompetent idiot.
Pardon me, but we have to laugh when he gives a driver a parking ticket and gets his arm shut up in the window of the escaping car.
We're talking, of course, about Inspector Clouseau, the egotistical French detective with the Pepe le Pew accent. We are not, most assuredly, talking about silver-haired Steve Martin.
He has been declared the comic genius of his generation - even though he has never been nominated for an Academy Award. He has written books, including his most recent memoir, "Born Standing Up." He has written plays, including "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" and "The Underpants," both staged at local theaters.
He plays the banjo and juggles. As an actor, he has won the New York Film Critics award for "All of Me" and critical acclaim for "Roxanne." He hosted the Oscars one year, only to come across as more sophisticated than comedic.
He collects art - multimillion dollars' worth of Picassos, Seurats and Edward Hoppers - often on view in his own gallery in Las Vegas.
Anyway you shake it, this dude has got to be pretty smart.
So what's he doing playing the supreme boob, Inspector Clouseau, in "The Pink Panther 2," or "Pink Panther Deux" as the French would say?
Showing every sign of shameless bravura, Martin spoke to us recently at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in New York and claimed that "Pink Panther 2" is not a steal from Peter Sellers, who originated the role in 1963. "We have attempted to make it our own and, honestly, I don't think we are the same. I am the third actor to play him, and I think that other actors will play him later. Like James Bond and Hamlet, he can be played by different actors."
Ironically, it was actress Ava Gardner, cast to play Madame Clouseau in the original film, who brought about a change in that casting. When she read the script she declared it "too silly" and backed out. This prompted Peter Ustinov, the original choice for Clouseau, to also back out. Sellers stepped in, with French model Capucine playing his wife.

Most of the plodding first act of Stormy Weather, the new musical about the life of Lena Horne, is a fairly generic star-is-born scenario. We’ve seen this story a hundred times. While watching it last Sunday at the Pasadena Playhouse, I wondered how this could possibly be an example of what the playhouse’s marketers mean when they say their company is “Leading the Way in L.A. Theatre.”
Yes, official playhouse parlance links those six words with “Pasadena Playhouse,” almost as a subtitle. Inside the Stormy Weather program, the “Leading the Way in L.A. Theatre” slogan perches on the top corner of 28 pages. It’s prominently displayed on the theater’s website. It reads like a direct challenge to Center Theatre Group – which is usually – reflexively – considered the leader in L.A. theater.
“Leading the Way” leads to inevitable questions. Which way? Are the people who run the playhouse claiming that it leads L.A. theater by every conceivable standard? Judging from the first act of Stormy Weather, the playhouse seems to be “leading the way” into the past.
Horne’s life story is told from the perspective of a flashback from the early 1980s. In it, her pal and former MGM vocal coach (Dee Hoty) encourages her to do a solo show on Broadway to recover from the deaths of all the men in her life. But the ’80s framework for the flashback doesn’t appear right away, giving the first act a choppy quality – and its revelations kill some of the story’s suspense: You can’t look at any of these men in the rest of the play without seeing the Grim Reaper hovering over them.
Stormy Weather becomes more compelling after intermission. Horne expands her horizons and faces more complicated problems in Sharleen Cooper Cohen’s script. She loses her obvious role in the Show Boat movie to Ava Gardner, surely because of racism. She’s accused of being a Communist. She has trouble balancing the increasing black militancy of her son (Jordan Barbour) with the sensibilities of her white, Jewish husband (Robert Torti).

Legendary fashion designer Valentino Garavani is the subject of an upcoming documentary called "Valentino: The Last Emperor," which lovingly captures the intense relationship he shares with his ex-boyfriend and longtime business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti. The film also reveals the glamorous lifestyle of the Italian designer, who has homes in Rome, New York City, London, Gstaad and a 152-foot yacht that employs a full-time staff of 11. He spoke with NEWSWEEK's Nicki Gostin about his retirement from the world of high fashion, his beloved half-dozen pugs and the challenges of designing an Oscar gown for actresses like Julia Roberts and Cate Blanchett. (Wanna see Valentino's take on red-carpet dresses of years past, both gowns of his creation and ones made by other designers? Click here!)
Which movie stars did you love?
At the time, there were so many. Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth in "Gilda," which was an amazing visual movie. Also, they were symbols of fashion every day. They had a contract to dress in a certain way every day to please the public, even if they were going to the supermarket. Today the stars are different. They dress for the Oscars. You don't see them dress well if there is not a party or red carpet.

thank Harumi, and glad to know that you are still around here and enjoy pics :flower:
