Aweng Chuol

Schön Magazine 49 November 2025 All about reinvention
Schonstudio Schon Michelle Helena Janssen
At the centre of our Issue 49 story is our cover star Aweng Chuol, who wears Valentino and epitomises beauty as something alive, fluid and ever-changing. Inside, model Noah Bates adds a sharp edge to menswear, underscoring fashion’s core: evolution over stasis.

We spotlight the talent reshaping style and culture in their own ways. Haley Lu Richardson, radiant in Pandora, reinvents herself through her debut poetry book and pole dancing pursuits. Lexie Liu bridges music and futurism, while Charlie Heaton captures the restless momentum of change, as he prepares for the release of the final season of ‘Stranger Things’. Sonja Weißer grounds the idea of reinvention with an actor’s quiet strength, while actor and singer Asha Banks and actor Ella Anderson embody youth in flux, a reminder of film’s creative power.

The pages of Schön! have always been open to voices who resist definition, such as those of model and activist Vivian Jenna Wilson and timeless icon Erykah Badu, whose groundbreaking fusion of music, soul and style has redefined cultural boundaries for decades, reminding us that change is not a trend but a way of being.

In Berlin, we turn our lens to artisans whose craft becomes a form of storytelling: florist Lilo Klinkenberg, food stylist Hannah Kleeberg, photographer and content creator Melanie Kieback and author Raphaëlle Red. Each of them is portrayed in CHANEL, underscoring how creation itself is an act of reinvention, whether through words, images, flavours or blooms.

In an exclusive editorial with Louis Vuitton, we show iconic codes reimagined through a fresh lens: the A/W 2025 collection by Nicolas Ghesquière is a perfect example of fashion which combines heritage, modernity and novel inspirations to continue writing new stories.

Schön! 49 explores the energy of fashion: the forward-motion of imagination, the inventive flow that underpins all the features in this issue. Creating is an act of reinvention, and every reinvention begins with the people behind the stories.

It’s official: this year’s hottest haircut is now supermodel approved. From Taylor Russell’s gamine look to a sideburn-heavy cut on Jodie Turner-Smith, pixie cuts have long been trending among Hollywood actresses. But this week, South Sudanese model Aweng Chuol attended the 2025 Fashion Trust Awards in a spiked pixie, giving this season’s most popular style an edge.

On the red carpet, she debuted a finger-raked, gelled hairstyle—paired with a muddy Oude Waag dress and reflective earrings—executed by hairstylist Shayz Enrique. While most of her hair was pushed upwards, slicked strands presented natural curves at the front, which framed her face. Using Rihanna’s Fenty Hair, Enrique’s gel-tipped fingers (try: The Gelly Type Strong Hold Gel) gave Chuol’s pixie a firm structure without sacrificing her natural, lived-in look.

But it’s not the first time she’s gone short. At last year’s CFDA Awards, Chuol wore a razored wet look while a tight bowl cut at a Marc Jacobs party back in February was more smooth and even. Now, she’s returning to her natural hair length, showing sculptural volume and chic versatility we may not have expected from a pixie cut.

To complete the look, makeup artist Matthew Fishman used MAC’s new Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation for a dreamy, yet rugged beauty moment. Caviar lip liner defined her glazed angelic lips, while lashes and a dark waterline enhanced her smokey copper eyeshadow. With pixie cuts turning out to be this season’s hottest look, one thing’s for sure: Aweng Chuol approves.Essence

Kenyan-born, South Sudanese model @awengchuol has always moved with purpose. First discovered at 16 while working the register at McDonald’s, her trajectory has been meteoric: from a 2018 Paris Fashion Week debut for Vetements, to campaigns for Burberry and Jean Paul Gaultier—all before the age of 25. But behind the lens, Chuol's focus sharpens: a devoted philanthropist + outspoken advocate for mental health and human rights, Chuol studied International Policy with the ambition of working within the United Nations body for South Sudan—a dream that may have changed shape, but that’s ethos persists.

Aweng Chuol on identity, activism, and what it really means to be iconic

“You can’t show up half of yourself and do a good job.”
Born in Venice Beach, UGG has grown into a global cultural icon. Its Autumn/Winter 2025 campaign, Iconic From the First Step, brings together a diverse mix of models, musicians, actors, and designers to explore creativity, collaboration, and community. Among them is Aweng Chuol, whose journey in the international fashion scene mirrors the campaign’s spirit. We spoke with her about identity, activism, and what it really means to be iconic.

Alexandra Schmidt: Looking back on your own path, which early experiences or memories set the course that led you to where you are today?
Aweng Chuol: One of my earliest memories that really shaped who I am was deciding to leave my hometown, Western Sydney, and step into the world of fashion. I had just finished high school and honestly thought I had other plans for my life, but it all worked out exceptionally well.
Can you recall a moment when you realized you were capable of more than you had expected?
There have been many moments like that, but one that really stands out is my very first fashion circuit, which I did on my own. That’s when I realized I was way more capable than I’d ever given myself credit for.
The word “iconic” is used so often in fashion that it can start to lose meaning. What does being iconic mean to you, beyond just image or fame?
For me, being iconic is about devotion. Devotion to your craft, to yourself. It’s about who you want to remember yourself as, long before the lights and cameras ever come on.
Beyond your work as a model and actor, you’re also an activist, using your voice for mental health awareness and LGBTQIA+ rights, especially for young people with refugee backgrounds. How does it feel to carry that responsibility and be seen as a symbol of hope?
It is a privilege to be able to hold the responsibility of speaking out on issues affecting communities I’m from, especially now with everything going on in the world; it feels so important. We have to keep our communities.
Your activism feels very personal and emotional. What gives you the strength to keep showing up even when the world feels heavy?
I think about future generations. They still need us to fight. And I think about those who came before me. I’ve always looked up to Waris Dirie and her work. I hope that the younger generation also have someone they look up to for activism & learning more about what is happening in our current world.
You’ve lived and worked across several continents, surrounded by different cultures and perspectives. How has that shaped your sense of belonging?
It’s taught me a lot about how important human connection is and how nuanced perspectives and experiences can be. I’ve become more understanding of people, and my sense of belonging has become more fluid. Home is wherever I feel understood, surrounded by the people who make me feel that way.
“For me, being iconic is about devotion. Devotion to your craft, to yourself.”
UGG celebrates not just its iconic designs but also the people behind them. Who has played that kind of role in your life?
I’ve been lucky to have an amazing group of friends who’ve shaped who I am. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without them. The person who has always pushed me the most & made sure I knew that the world has not ended yet is my cousin Juju. She has always stood by me through all my mistakes and wins.
The fashion world can be loud, fast-paced, and demanding. How do you stay connected to yourself amid all that noise?
Rituals are key. I meditate a lot, I spend time with friends who aren’t immersed in fashion, and I focus on taking care of my mental, spiritual, and physical health. You can’t show up half of yourself and do a good job. As I get older, I realize more and more that balance and control are what keep me connected.
UGG is about feeling good inside and out. What helps you create those moments of ease in your own life?
I dance in the rain, meditate, do movie marathons, and keep busy with hobbies. I surround myself with friends and loved ones and get massages. I’m a Venusian, double Libra with a Taurus moon, so self-care is definitely important when things get intense. Numero Berlin

A Night With Aweng Chuol

I had the pleasure of following around Sudanese model Aweng Chuol on a night out in New York City. Check out the photos below as well as a short interview where she speaks about her favorite fashion cities, the music she’s listening to and more. All photos mine.

Jacques Morel: Hey Aweng how are you?

Aweng Chuol: Hi! I’m good, how are you doing?

JM: We’re currently in an Uber on the way to a Self Portrait dinner on Halloween...how have you celebrated Halloween in the past?

AC: I haven’t actually, this is my first halloween.

JM: This is your first halloween?!

AC: Yea! I don’t be celebrating halloween. Everytime Halloween comes around I think I’m working all the time.

JM: No way! You haven’t dressed up?

AC: I’ve never dressed up.

JM: What!

AC: This is the most I feel like I’ve dressed up. This year I was going to go as Storm actually but then I didn’t have time to go to LA, I was shooting and I was like, let me just pull something together tonight.

JM: Well, you look fantastic tonight. Speaking of your outfit, who are you wearing for halloween?

AC: I’m wearing Self Portrait. Fully. Head to toe. Feather dress, heels and a cute, cute bag.

JM: What are you listening to nowadays? I know we spoke about Lil Baby earlier...

AC: Yea, I’m listening to Lil Baby alot. I’m legitimately in my mob wife era. Laughs. I’m listening to a lot of Hip-Hop, I’m listening to a lot of like, rap mainly but like manifestation rap almost? Does that make sense? Rap where it’s like I’m the G.O.A.T and I made this and I’ve done this. My favorite song right now actually is Lil Baby’s song with Drake, “Yes, Indeed.” And [Lil Baby’s] “Freestyle?” Give that boy his credit. That boy can rap.

JM: Wah, wah wah...

AC: b*tch I’m Lil Baby! (Laughter) He said “purr!” When he said “Cartier glasses, I can’t even peek at you?! Yellow Ferrari like Pikachu?!” That’s crazy. His bars are lit.

JM: Speaking about music, we were talking about it earlier, what’s your [Beyoncé’s] ‘Renaissance’ top 5?

AC: Top 5? You’re going to have to give me a top 3. I feel like top 5 is the whole album at that point. Top 3? Renaissance, I love “Heated,” because...”Tiffany on me?!” b*tch...when she said that spandex line!? Yea I’m sorry, love ya.

Um. “Heated,” “Virgo’s Groove” and...I love “America Has A Problem”

JM & AC: mmmmmm!!

AC: Yea we don’t have the time to get into that one! The world has a problem right now, honestly. But America? Yes. Let’s talk about it.

JM: Finally, I wanted to play a fun game with you. Let’s play f*ck, Marry, Kill Fashion City Edition.

AC: Fashion City Edition?! Okay!

JM: New York, Milan and Paris.

AC: Ahhh!! Okay. Milan, New York, Paris. f*ck Marry Kill. Whoa, you gon’ get me in trouble!!

Umm..Kill New York. Is that crazy?! Kill New York because I feel like Fashion Week has become so expeditiously exciting in Europe... because New York is just too far. And I feel like with [New York] Fashion Week we’re all just dragging ourselves to the other side to do it. So yea, let’s kill New York.

Let’s f*ck Milan.

JM: Mm...wait, wait, what is it about Milan that makes you want to have sex with it?

AC: Milan is a sensual city...that’s where fashion is legitimately. I feel like it’s smooth...everyone in trenches...everyone really drags it out and then Paris ends with a pop of color.

So I feel like Milan? I’m gonna f*ck her. She’s like, “You comin?” You’re like “Ite.” [She’s like] “It’s going to be like 3 - 4 days... we might do Versace...” She’s like a “we been to Powerhouse because we rule the 90s” kinda style. [Milan] gives me that. For me it’s like, I gotta sleep with [Milan] I gotta fornicate with you at least once.

And then Marry Paris because it’s Paris. And it’s the city of love. And she gives sensuality and sultry and she gives being about the business because almost everything was made here anyways in regards to fashion. And kinda ‘cause Chanel was from there. The French know how to get down.

So let’s kill New York, let’s f*ck Milan and let’s marry Paris.

JM: Thank you!

AC: No problem! Laughs Jacques
