Best collections of all time

That’s super interesting cause I don’t feel that way at all… I think artistic expression already peaked. I believe the Internet and the industry are so developed at the moment that there’s basically no room for greatness.

I see designers posting 73736363 times a day and I’m like 🤨🤨🤨 shouldn’t you be in the studio designing? What level of dedication can you have when you spend your life on Instagram? Liking all the silly influencers posts, I saw that even boring not com got a like  he’s a little bit better than the rest but still.
you have a point i dont disagree with the lack of quality we have now.
but i am hopeful that there will be a counter reaction to every bad period something good will come out.
but you see it even on here online in general that wanting things to be better and researching and dissecting is an inconvenience people want to believe in something even when its not there.

i dont read those fashion post its incomplete news often i prefer always interviews where designers or whoever is speaking directly.
i find it more helpful to understand mind set versus output.

every time i see on my for you page a show review i block the account lol .

I wish though, but I’m kinda pessimistic tbh.

Yeah, it’sa reality that some people have less standards than others. That’s why I was focusing more on the “haters” (which I am). I’m curious about what Jeanclaude thinks for instance.

I also believe very few people really know about fashion and I dislike the reviews when the person talking acts like a consumer. Like… I would wear that and that… it’s a take I can’t stand.

I feel like that when I see a Hedi Slinane show (I want everything) but I can separate the wish to own something from the quality a collection has as a fashion statement or just as a fashion moment.

A designer needs to create products that you want to wear and that make you feel something, but a fashion show for me is different. They must aim to achieve something aesthetically meaningful as a whole.

Balenciaga SS 2005, FW 2005, SS 2006, FW 2006, FW 2007
Vuitton FW2004, FW2006, SS 2007, SS2009 - MJ collections during the same period were superb as well. I like how he approached his own brand and Vuitton's on a dual track - similar vision but different focus.
Alexander McQueen SS 1999, SS2005, FW2006

I would like to add Karl's Chanel Metiers d'art show in 2018. Even the sailor inspired looks are very feminine. It was a sentimental show...there were also many pieces with exquisite details that really put the modern day Metiers collections in shame.

This moment will live in my head rent free for the rest of my life, even after 25 years... and I'm still waiting for the HD version.

Here are some of my favourite collections. I am a hater of nowadays fashion thanks to them:

John Galliano F/W 1994-95

Alexander McQueen S/S 2001

Gucci by Tom Ford S/S 1997:

Prada F/W 1999-00

Helmut Lang F/W 1999-00

Martin Margiela F/W 1997-98

Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière F/W 08-09

Rick Owens F/W 16-17

I’m surprised I’m the only one mentioning Lanvin by Alber 😯
He did his best works during some of the most competitive seasons of fashion week. Unlike these days where everyone seem be just trying to outbasic each other

agree on all but please don't subscribe to the simplistic labeling of being critical to be a hater ....when people love something so much and can't develop/articulate reasons or find facts to support their argument etc its always the go to label to shut critical thinking down.

also dislike this idea when you judge a creative directors outcome means you have something personal against the person that made it or the ones that like it is exhausting in discussions online.

or have to part of a gang for nostalgia or good old past etc or hedi stan etc

i find if i give reason why something is not good i would expect the debate opposition to come with reasons why it is and show examples etc

but i feel there is no real place for actual debate and analyzing fashion or creativity without it being about shopping list or personal taste defense attorney in training.

Gaultier's spring '94 collection, with the tribal piercings and tattooes, mixed w/ shapes & styles from the 1700s, but rendered in denim. That man had more ideas in that one collection than most designers have in, like, 10.

“Tattoo You” remains an extraordinarily influential, even visionary POV with its trompe-l’oeil tattoo bodystockings styled with denim 17th-century French frock coats, Highlander kilts, and Indian sarong and Nehru jackets: It is the ultimate statement of multiculturalism beauty that transcends culture and time. Add to that his cast of tattooed and pierced individuals intermingling with the superist of OG Supers, and it deservedly became Jean Paul’s greatest creative statement ever. But it’s not a particularly strong offering of investable wardrobe separates, and hardly his greatest offerings of designs once it’s broken down; he surpassed this collection time and time again. HIs “Rabbi Chic” collection that proceeded “Tattoo You” was far far far superior— both in his daring mix of the religious and the rebellious. And David Boals in sidecurls and a beaded yarmulke was sexy AF. Jean Paul had so many supreme collections since “Tattoo You” that continues to be pilfered, plundered and outright ripped off by so many, that his archive is a 360 in education fashion: Design and construction; casting, styling and presentation; and campaign. One of his strongest men’s proposal was A/W 2001, playing with proportions, fragility and androgyny, and still maintaining an undisputed masterclass of classic masculinity. No one nowadays possesses this brand of sophistication and daring, let alone in menswear. We were so unbelievably highest of fashion spoiled rotten yesteryears. Adding some sausage to the bun party...

Jean Paul Gaultier A/W 2001

Helmut Lang A/W 2000

Gucci A/W 2002

Helmut Lang A/W 2004

Dior Homme A/W 2006

Alexander McQueen A/W 2009

Burberry S/S 2011

Dries Van Nten S/S 2015

Jean Paul Gaultier A/W 2001
His menswear wasn't always on my Must Have list, but this collection was (and still is) slick as snot. Sting wore one of these outfits, and he definitely looked like rock-star royalty. This whole collection reminds me of what Riccardo did years later at Givenchy, even down to the models.

Speaking of Riccardo, this couture collection from Givenchy will always remain a favorite of mines. No words needed, since the clothes speak for themselves. (Just wish I had a better clip to show.)

^^^ So so so much goodness in that Jean Paul offering. The same collection, styled the same way, just on a more 2025-appropriate cast, and social would be in a frenzy. Just like John Galliano repurposed his same old same old signatures for that Margiela collection with Pat’s makeup, and all of a sudden, it’s so visionary and breaking the internet… People just never knew how supreme fashion was.

Riccardo outright ripped off Jean Paul wholesale for his Givenchy men’s— down to the casting, but just more Black and Latin men. Shameless.

Shady intro lol

I feel like it’s an ever changing thing for me and it’s easier to list favorite and worst collections from designers than to have a list of favorites...

Oh, no no, I actually mean it. I didn’t want to be shady at all, I was genuinely curious and interested to know their opinions. I am, in fact, one of those who doesn’t like anything and I probably belong to that group of what tfsers call haters. And I have to say that the “haters” are one of my fave tfs members and one of the reasons i keep checking the forum 😌

That FW06 Chanel Collection… I adore it! I could live in it.

This thread is so much better with images. I’m revisiting those old collections you guys like and it’s simply sad we don’t have that level of image making anymore.

Another fave of mine's is Stefano's last collection for YSL menswear, fall 2012. It was primarily black suiting and outerwear, with some decorative leather touches thrown in, all tailored to perfection. I'll always believe that his menswear w/ YSL and Zegna didn't get the respect that it deserved. (src: nytimes, vintagesunday, hypebeast, WWD)
