I put a myspace bulletin together earlier today, so I'm just cutting and pasting it. The album covers are from Amazon except for Bertine. That's from seed.peerimpact.com
And I see that I can only use 15 images per post, so I'll split this between two posts...
I guess it’s that time of the year again. I hope this list isn’t too predictable, but it can be difficult when certain online magazines take it upon themselves to recommend every moderately interesting album that they “should” appreciate (along with lots of mediocre ones). There are numerous casualties here, but when you start putting together lists of 50+ albums there’ll be plenty of things that you didn’t really really love. So, I said goodbye to some work that I liked, but didn’t love and some old favorites that never worked their way into a regular rotation. Sorry to Tool, The Decemberists, Thom and Slayer etc.
It also goes without saying that this is a list of ALBUMS. There were plenty of bands who put out a few songs that I love dearly, but I’m sticking with stuff that I can more or less listen to without being tempted to skip ahead. Sorry to Paris, Basement Jaxx, Tom Ze, Christina and Mastodon, etc.
And, finally, I had to avoid the temptation to include albums that are certainly awesome, but remain on my iPod unlistened. I bet 3 discs of Tom Waits and that crazy new Scott Walker opus are more deserving than some of the trifles on my list, but I’ll have to wait a bit longer before finding out for myself.
If you were unaware, I was obsessed with the number 26 when I was younger. Since it's my current age, I figured it was a good way to handle this task.
Please feel free to tell me how fantastic/loathsome my choices are.
26
Planningtorock- Have it All
No one can resist “an electro-glam-classical-hip-hop opera about self-actualization”.
25
Under Byen- Samme Stof Som Stof
This is 2006’s mandatory faux-Björk inclusion.
24
Justin Timberlake- Future Sex/Love Sounds
Justin: Next time lose the last 3 tracks and you’ll rank a lot higher. I’m a fan of “future sex”, but I can’t say the same for your “love sounds”
23
The Roots- Game Theory
Yes, the token hip hop album. If this were a list of SONGS there’d be a higher representation.
22
Beach House- S/T
I thought this was going to be one of those whiney acoustic strummer albums, but it’s like Mazzy with 2006 hazed out production.
21
Scissor Sisters- Ta Dah!
It’s not up to the debut. This is true, but I don’t mind them moving closer to Elton’s sound.
20
Persephone’s Bees- Notes From the Underworld
A pop genre mashup with a Russian accented girl on lead vocals? Sign me up.
19
Joanna Newsom- Ys
Joanna makes it because I love the production, lyrics and the way that she kept her quirk while becoming easier to listen to.
18
The Rapture- Pieces of the People We Love
Yes. I still like mindless dance music.
17
My Chemical Romance- The Black Parade
I can see that this is where everyone will be making fun of me, but I don’t care. I never listened to them before, but this is the unintentional kitsch rock masterpiece of the year. When things are so ridiculous I don’t mind funding the lead singer’s DH purchases.
16
Ellen Allien and Apparat- Orchestra of Bubbles
Deutschland über Alles.
15
The Sleepy Jackson- Personality: One was a Spider, One was a Bird
Yeah, his voice can annoy, but for my money this is near-perfect pop
14
Boris- Pink
It’s been a year or so, but it still RAWKS.
13
Amy Diamond- Still Me Now
I risked losing friends because I was obsessed with a 12 year old Swedish girl, but it was worth it. And then she was in Stockholm for a free show in August…
12
TV on the Radio- The Return to Cookie Mountain
Yeah. It’s good.
To be continued...
