Books and their homes....

Great thread! There are some beautiful, and inspiring, pictures here. I'd love to have all my books in one room...as opposed to piled around the entire apartment like stalagmites.

What about when Belle walks into the library of the Beast's castle and there are millions of shelves of books that reach the ceiling? There were even ladders to reach the ones on the tippy-top!

I think it's hysterical that you said that---I was definitely going to bring it up. I like this thread and it reminds me of my mother's house in Boston. She says that a house without books is one without character and that its inhabitants must not be as 'informed' as people who delight in the act of reading and cherish their books. Might be a little judgmental, but I think I agree to some extent.

I think exactly like Your mom, if I walk in someone's house and see no books I say to myself oh, no, another dumb! Judgmental yes, but so true!

I love books and displaying them!

i love the name of this thread..^_^...

great pics!
the one above does look extremely cozy!..

Had someone over yesterday who's never been to my house before, and she said a couple times, "I've never seen so many books!" It was deja vu, because that's what people always used to say when they came over to my parents' house when I was a little kid

I think you can be wise and knowledgeable without books, but I know for sure that I was meant to live with books. I have loved them from the very beginning ...

it's very good thread...
with some good ideas...
i will need this for sure later...

great thread. i have quite a library (3000+ books) at home so it's nice to see little touches (like magazines sideways on a shelf so they don't slump over) that improve ease of use.

so glad everyone's loving this thread..
and contributing too...thanks!....

3,000 books :o..
wow....that must be incredible..

^yeah, the life of a scholarB).

unfortunately i have only one tiny closet in my whole apt., but bookshelves everywhere.

sorry i'm a bit off topic here but what do you study?...do you have a wide range of books or are most of them specific to certain subjects?..

you should post pictures!...:flower:..

this thread is amazing :woot:

i have been trying to think of a creative way to display all the books i have. i tried stacking them according to color, but i really would like to have some sort of logical system.
..i am never getting rid of any of my books! even this one series i read in elementary through middle school that i was just obsessed with. the books were really hard to find, though, i had to order a lot off amazon and found them in tiny book shops. so, i will NEVER get rid of them, they took so long to collect!

well, this thread is very inspiring :D

^i recently finished my ph.d. and i write quite a bit of art criticism and art historical scholarship so it's nice to have resources around the house rather than schlepping to a university/public library.

art books take up tons of space, and moving is a b*tch, but in effect my library is my first and greatest collection. though i do give away novels over the last few years cause i've run out of room (i hardly ever deaccession shoes, on the other hand!)

i'll try to post pics when I recharge my camera battery.

well feel free to send your novels my way if they're taking up your space...:innocent:

cant wait to see pics :woot:..
and congratulations on the ph.d..

Aww I can't believe you got rid of your novels! I'm living away from my 'headquarters' library for the next few months and I am loathing the distance between myself and my Dickens, Austen, etc. No particular reason, really. It's just preferable to wake up next to Henry James. Pun intended.

And congratulations on the degree, good show!

I only organise my books in height order, but otherwise I like a mish-mash of colours and thicknesses and genres. Saying that, I only have a couple of hundred books of my own (I had to get rid of lots when I emigrated) but if I ever had a library I think I'd have to have more of a system.
