There is something reassuring about Tomas Maier's seductive evolution of Bottega Veneta. As expensive (often headspinningly so) as these clothes are, there is so little that is nouveau about them that they seem to underscore the old-fashioned idea that wealth should be displayed discreetly. "I love a beautifully made product but I hate things looking new," said Maier after his presentation. "They're missing personality."

There was certainly plenty of character in these clothes, starting with the fabrics. They were luxe but worn, so that Maier's signature soft tailoring molded to the body. The most eye-catching piece was a jacket in leaf-green tartan that had been dyed, washed, resized, and hand-painted. There was quieter appeal in washed leathers, flannels, and piece-dyed moleskin.

New this season was a more formal edge. Maier likes what he calls "the nonchalant innocence" of young men in ties who've never worn them before. Paired with the soft brogues and the handmade, hand-painted porkpie hats that accessorized the collection, the collars and ties, slightly shrunken jackets, and trousers with narrow cuffs evoked Jack Lemmon in the pre-lapsarian sixties moment before America let it all hang out.

The bags that are Bottega's bread and butter ran a wide, curious, but covetable gamut: a duffel bag in ostrich dyed orange, a carpet bag in antique velvet, and totes in the label's classic woven intrecciato and Madagascar crocodile (which Maier loves for its big, rough scales and naturally worn brown tone).

I find the whole thing reassuringly boring. I don't mean that in a bad way.

This is boring for sure. Some tackily clashing colors, like that orange bag.(That outfit says 'redneck hunter' to me) The bowties? Err...

Some of these things scream quality, though. I like the low cut necks of some of the sweaters.

Nice pieces here and there, but this is very, very boring. Bottega Veneta should stick to the "Luxury goods" sector.

I really loved those two black outfits at the end of the show, would like to get my hands on them!

the checks remind me too much of dries but its just more of the same-the classic bottega look i suppose.. i particularly like that short velvet cabin jacket.

i like most of this but their use of the much 'rising' bow was beyond silly..
reasuring is good and it sells like hotcakes

bart, will you please add credits to the pics and article posted? thanks :flower:

It's very basic, but with a subtly luxurious, tactile, cosy feel... I don't exactly love everything, but I could absolutely wear a lot of it.

And yes, the bows get silly worn this way...

Awful shades of green used here (pukey, muddy or just plain tacky), but the pieces themselves are quite nice. Classic, restrained and somewhat stuffy, but not exceedingly so.

i was relly intrigued by bv's offerings for fall 2004, both menswear and womenswear...

not so much anymore

Basic is okay, but basic without personality is another thing. I feel this is the latter.

I like it. I would spice it up a touch with like an electric purple belt with that black suit...

bart, will you please add credits to the pics and article posted? thanks

I posted the credits (men.style.com) in my second post, just because I forgot to add them in my first. Sorry, I guess they're not very noticeable there, should I add them to the first post instead?:flower:

Bottega IS sticking to the luxury goods sector.
Its not a "fashion label" so to speak..just extremely well made clothes that appeal to a lot of people.

That being said, this isnt for me.

I didnt see one thing that I DID NOT like....but its alot of brown and gray, kind of dull in the color scheme, but as a whole...some gorgeous pieces.
