LONDON, february 19, 2002 – The Boudicca experience is an intense one. For designers Zowie Broach and Brian Kirkby, fashion goes far beyond the simple enjoyment of things to wear, and into the realms of symbolism, psychology and politics.
This show was a walk on the dark side—literally. Models walked in somber steps, following a spotlight that was dragged overhead to illuminate their way in a blacked-out studio. But if the sinister portent hanging over this collection was unavoidable, it never overshadowed the level of refinement Boudicca's work has reached. Unlike many less experienced London designers, Broach and Kirkby have a rigorous way of cutting and tailoring that produces precisely pressed and folded graphic shapes that could not have come from any other hands. A Boudicca piece—whether an asymmetric satin skirt, a kimono dress with a caped top or a dinner jacket with the lapels fused into the jacket and the tail lopped off square—is recognizable by its formality, dignity and presence.
Though these compelling qualities have spellbound many fashion insiders, outside support has been hard to come by—maybe because the label is impossible to pigeonhole by trend or category. Barneys New York is one of the few stores to carry Boudicca pieces, as was the London boutique Yasmin Cho, which has recently gone out of business. Such blows are capable of knocking small designers off-course, but by the look of this collection, Boudicca is determined to keep on following its own uncompromising path.

beautiful. if i were a designer, i would design stuff a lot like this... love it, love it, love it! :flower:

Love it! Thanks for bringing this in,Perle.

How about we create a big retrospective thread for Boudicca like I did with Preen...just so we can keep them all in one place and from falling into the pits??

^Agreed! Gosh I really admire Boudicca's clothing.
Bought my second piece at their sample sale on Friday. Everything was just so breathtaking!

:woot: I like that idea scott...because there's not that much stuff here at tFS on boudicca (well not in comparison to the more mainstream designers) and I've currently been doing a project on them...(had to pretend I was employed as a designer for them and do a collection) but I love their stuff, and would love to hear some more opinions on it all.

I tend to get confused when we're discussing 3 different seasons at once, but it comes in handy for comparison. Let's have it both ways ^_^

FFF that sounds like an amazing project! You should post your designs some time.

It was just a quick 5 day project...my theme was anthropology/anatomy (which I chose because of their fondness for 'accents' on their clothes...bum/calf accents etc) 4 final illustrations, 20 initial designs, a moodboard and sketchbook...I think we may be expanding on it in the weeks to come in specialism. I enjoyed learning more about boudicca, their aesthetic is just so appealing to me.

this could be used as a general thread

but i see the nothing wrong with covering each season in a seperate thread, though:flower:

No,no...not at all. I was just thinking more along the lines of their older collections till maybe 03. We can let the most recent collections remain as they are....just that there are some early things that I don't think many even know anything about. Sort of a time-line,I suppose.

i recently discovered them and they are already on my list of favourite designers. it is very different from everything else. here are some photos from spring 06.
