Thursday, September 13, 2007 Cameron Russell and Robin Chase A supermodel, a CEO, and a motley Cantabrigian crew carpool to Walden Pond By Carmen Nobel Globe Correspondent A lifelong fan of environmental conservation and natural beauty, Henry David Thoreau would have approved of the odd assemblage carpooling from Cambridge to Walden Pond on this balmy August afternoon. Supermodel Cameron Russell is home for a family visit, having spent most of the summer on international catwalks and photo shoots. In her four-year career she has modeled for designers such as Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, and Armani, and graced the cover of Harpers Bazaar and Russian Vogue. Last month, at 20, she joined DNA Model Management, one of New Yorks most elite agencies. Now branded simply as Cameron, shes the sun-kissed star of H&Ms Summer of Surf campaign, filmed in Australia. Shes also a part-time student at Columbia University, planning an eventual double major in economics and creative writing. Today Cameron is riding shotgun in her parents 2002 Ford Windstar, sporting a baggy T-shirt and vintage jean shorts by Levi Strauss and Co. Camerons mom is Robin Chase, co-founder of the car-sharing company Zipcar Inc. and CEO of GoLoco.org, an online venture that marries social networking and carpooling. Its a way to meet new people and save a few pounds of CO2. To that end, the minivan is filled to passenger capacity: Cameron and Chase, along with David Reeves, a project manager for a corporate wellness start-up called Limeade; Zeng Li, a student of extra-solar planetary science at MIT; and yours truly. Husband, father, and GoLoco president Roy Russell is at the wheel. We introduce ourselves as the van begins a slow crawl toward Route 2. Cameron asks Li whether we can move to an extrasolar planet after we destroy our own. Li says no. If we cant go to another planet, then whats the point of finding it? Cameron says. (Thoreau once said, Whats the use of a fine house if you havent got a tolerable planet to put it on?) The main Walden beach is packed with like-minded picnickers, so we head down a wooded path and under a barbed wire fence to a sparser strip of sand. Some of us hesitate at the fence. Come on, guys, Cameron says, evoking Thoreaus spirit of civil disobedience. Its only a little barbed. On the beach, Chase offers to share her couscous salad, with tomatoes and basil from her Cambridgeport garden. Cameron takes a big scoop and tells her mom that the salad would be even better with some feta. Im remembering that a few years ago, Oxford University scientists noted a mitochondrial DNA variant that boosted metabolism among a lucky few. The fashion press called it the skinny supermodel gene. Cameron looks over at the outfit her svelte mom is wearing over a bathing suit and says, Hey, thats where my skirt went! Chase removes the evidence and invites her daughter for a swim. If I get my hair wet now, its going to be wet on the train tonight, Cameron says. Shes due at a catalog shoot first thing in the morning. Theres a page called Cameron Russell for President in 2032 on Facebook.com. The platform includes Pro-Lollipop, Pro-Gumball, Anti-Pooping in Pools. Sharing rides via GoLoco requires a Facebook.com membership. Chase tells us she chose to team up with Facebook because its among the best-managed social-networking sites. Cameron agrees. The Facebook management has been pretty good about shutting down faux profiles of people pretending to be her, she says. People impersonate you on Facebook? Reeves says. Cameron shrugs. They do. The sky gets darker. Cameron decides to go for a swim after all. She shimmies down to a royal blue bikini (Calvin Klein collection) and wades into Walden Pond. She has those lumbar dimples that you generally see only on the lithe and lovely. They glint in the setting sun.
