Stick Your Neck Out

It's time to embrace the pendant

February 8, 2006—Until now, you probably figured that man jewelry (other than a watch and that band of metal you wear to keep the wife happy) was best left to wiseguys, pirates, and Keith Richards. But with more and more designers putting their energy into coming up with cool designs for men, it may be time to rethink your preconceptions. For Spring 2006, forward-thinking types like Ann Demeulemeester and Kris Van Assche sent models down the runway in pendants that were more rock 'n' roll than disco. Closer to home, meanwhile, New York's Atelier consistently sells out of the pieces it stocks by Rust, a brand whose designs are inspired by Neolithic tools and weaponry rendered in silver and leather. Elsewhere, Mary Jo Pane, whose Miracle Icons line incorporates vintage elements and Buddhist meditation beads from Tibet (left), is also having a tough time keeping up with demand. She counts both Johnny Depp and Matthew McConaughey as clients, but, she adds, "The guys who wear my stuff are from all walks of life. It's not just about rock 'n' roll edginess anymore. It's getting bigger and bigger all the time." Note to Harrison Ford—that still doesn't make the earring okay.
Rust, $350-$425, at Atelier New York, 125 Crosby St., New York, (212) 941-8435; Miracle Icons, $65-395, at Barneys New York, (888) 822-7639, www.barneys.com, and Fred Segal Finery, 500 Broadway, Santa Monica, (310) 917-5546.

I really dig the Icon stuff...but its far too expensive. I have an old vintage bracelet with different Catholic Saint pendants. It was my mother's...a gift at her confirmation.

I should take the pendants off and make my own...be alot cheaper.

I love the Army guy one too.

Hmm I'm not to fond of those pieces, and I also find them ridiculously over priced. However I do think it is cool that this spring designers have taken time to make mens jewelry. I really like Dior Homme's and Gucci's jewelry collection, although I have yet to invest in a piece from either company.

Okay....my mother will probably kill me if she knew I did this.

She gave me a rosary and saint charm bracelet that she had from her first communion when she was 5...so yeah...this stuff is pretty old.

I took the crucifix part from the rosary and two charms (one being St. Christopher (my name)) and made this necklace. Looks like the Icon ones, but didn't cost me anything.

As long as it's not too much, it definitely can be sexy as hell. Love the rocker influence..

there is some great men's jewellery out there but one has to be selective- personally i keep it simple and alternate between an updated signet ring from garrard and a rose gold/quartz santos dumont ring from cartier (although i'm hoping they bring out a matching pendant for this one).

i'm also a fan of david yurman (who fortunatly is unknown in the uk) and i kinda like chrome hearts- but i'd rather go to a biker shop and get the real thing!

I have not had the oppourtunity to wear it yet. We'll see how it goes, and whether or not it bothers me.

It can be very cool indeed...It gives me a feeling of individuality. I wear a lot of Judy Blame especially the one he did for Comme des garcons...I’m talking gold chains with soldiers, pompoms or buttons. Get a lot of questions regarding my choice...but I don't care if its magenta or gold...it’s the statement that makes the piece cool.

I guess jewellery is cool if it urges people to think. This juxtaposition of grenades and pompoms, in my opinion, makes us re-evaluate where the money is going....arms & weapons.

But men wearing jewellery is not new....rapstars & hiphop musicians have made a huge contribution to the flashy jewellery industry...or the "BLING BLING" industry. It’s this concept of more is more that makes men's jewellery ironic at this point of time. Jewellery for men would be cooler if we brought back the old days of anarchy.
