Swarovski anoints the Next Bold Things to make jewelry...
In some ways, the fashion world is a bit like the Big Brother program: established companies are always looking for an underling to adopt and help foster. Atelier Swarovski is no stranger to this trend, and for the third time has launched a collection of jewelry created by some up-and-coming designers.
This time around the crystal-wares giant collaborates with high fashion favorites Christopher Kane, Giles, Doo.Ri, and Jonathan Saunders, jewelry designers Justin Giunta and Pippa Small, and Dutch designer Tord Boontje. The group’s eclectic mix is reflected in the collection, which is refined and funky at the same time.
In his second collaboration with Swarovski, Christopher Kane creates his collection using crystal mesh, pearls, and resin. Jonathan Saunders mixes leather, brass and ceramics with an “ancient, earthy color palette” to create edgy trinkets, rings and cuffs that remind us a little bit of Givenchy’s big metal grommets.
Doo.Ri’s pieces are light and interesting, combining Lucite with vividly colored crystals to give the effect that the gems are floating. Going a darker route, Subversive jewelry designer Justine Giunta created a chunkier, Baroque style collection featuring strange-but-fascinating crystal button headpieces.
But it’s Giles Deacon’s Disney-on-crack designs for the crystal giant that we can’t stop drooling over. There are chokers, bracelets, cuffs and key rings, all adorned with a Japanese anime character named ‘Eek.’ Which is exactly what the NYLON girls said when they first saw the pieces.
Oh, and Colette is stocking the collection – which, in case you didn’t know, means it must be really cool.
