This Model Went From Instagram to Paris Couture in Less Than a Year
JANUARY 26, 2017 7:22 PM by JANELLE OKWODU

“My favorite thing are the shows, you feel like the cool girl at school when you’re on the runway—everyone’s eyes are on you,” says Cara Taylor during a visit to the Vogue offices. As she’s one of the most impressive models to emerge in the past year, all eyes have been on Taylor as she’s risen through the ranks. Walking for Valentino and Dior during Spring 2017 couture week, emerging as one of the faces of Coach and Saint Laurent, and posing for Steven Meisel and Patrick Demarchelier, Taylor has kept herself plenty busy, but the athletic beauty from Alabama is just getting started. Here, everything you need to know about the rising star photographers and designers can’t get enough of.

It took one week for her to go from Instagram discovery to signed to an agency.

“When I was 8, a scout told me I should try modeling and we just ignored it. Then in high school all of a sudden an agency contacted me through Instagram and asked if I would come in for a meeting. I was like sure, why not. We took test shots and they sent those pictures out that night and I got callbacks. A week later we went to New York and I was signed.”

The best part of the job? Getting to meet people from all over the world.

“Modeling has helped me a lot, especially the traveling with making me worldlier. I’m learning because I’m seeing so much and going so many places. I love meeting everyone; there are so many people from around the world involved in fashion. I live in Alabama and where I’m from there is an army base so there are always people from different places, but this is just a whole new level. It’s just cool even to see everyone working.”

Sports helped to prepare her for the rigors of modeling.

“I started doing sports in high school and that was just my life. I wanted to go to the Olympics or be a college volleyball player. I did volleyball, basketball, and I danced for five years. Sports made me more comfortable. When you play volleyball, you’re always being watched and with dance, you’re constantly looking at your progress. It’s helped with modeling and I think it’s built my confidence. Plus, sports are such a team effort. In some ways modeling is an individual thing, but when you’re on a shoot, or backstage you have to cooperate with the photographers and stylists.”

She didn’t realize at first how big a deal it was to shoot with Steven Meisel.

“It was so surreal; I can’t even explain it. I was so nervous and excited. And I’d never even heard of Steven Meisel before I started modeling so I didn’t realize how big he was before I shot with him. That was good because otherwise I would have been even more nervous! I enjoyed the experience; he’s super nice and so talented.”

Alexander Wang’s Spring 2017 show is where she learned how to walk in heels.

“I loved Alexander Wang because the music had me so pumped I couldn’t wait to get on the runway. It was a great first show to do, such a good experience and he’s the nicest person ever. I feel like that’s where I learned how to walk. I’d had walking lessons because I’d never really worn high heels before, but there I got to watch all the other girls and see what they did so I could apply it to my walk and make it unique.”

Sometimes she doesn’t recognize herself in all those glamorous photos.

“Honestly it’s so weird because I don’t wear makeup and probably never would have if I didn’t start modeling. Seeing myself in all these different ways still surprises me, sometimes I look at a picture and I’m like, “Who is she? She’s sexy!” It’s amazing how all the makeup artists and hair stylists can transform you into this different person.”

After big hair changes at Alexander Wang, Rag & Bone, and Prada she’s always up for a backstage beauty moment.

“I didn’t know how many hair changes I’d have to go through when I started, but I thought, I’m a newcomer and this could be great for my career so of course I’m going to do it. I’d never changed my hair before, I had the same color my entire life. Seeing myself [as a platinum blonde] I was like, oh my god. It wasn’t Cara, but it was very Alexander Wang, and then I had Rag & Bone soon after that and they re-dyed it, and then at Prada it was cut into a bob. I’m open to everything and I trust the hairstylists to create something beautiful.”
