Caroline’s Sports Corner: Cup Madness!
Hi, everyone! I’m Caroline Winberg–23 years old, a native of Sweden. Most readers of The Daily
and Chic Report
probably know me as a model, my full-time gig for the last six years. But you probably don’t know that my biggest passion in life is sports. It’s been my life since age 6–when I wasn’t on the soccer field, I’d be storming the tennis court. On sunny days, I’d run track or play beach volleyball. During the cold months, I’d hit the ski slopes until my feet were frozen, begging my parents to let me go up the lift one more time.
This Monday was the first time I ever wished I was Dutch. Not because of all the beautiful women who live in Holland or the fact that everyone rides a bicycle to work in Amsterdam. It’s because they have something I want–
Ruud van Nistelrooy! Holland and Italy were playing in a group C, which has been nicknamed The Group of Death. I don’t think anyone expected Holland to outshine the other teams, starting off the Cup by beating Italy 3-0. The Italians, who won the last World Cup, didn’t stand a chance. I couldn’t take my eyes off van Nistelrooy. And naturally, he’s not just an amazing player, he’s also extremely good looking.
Sweden beat Greece in a game I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to watch because I was on location in a Coney Island van and ESPN wasn’t on the TV menu. On Saturday, I finally had a day off from work and I woke up super-early with butterflies in my stomach–so excited for the game that I was unable to go back to sleep. I met Swedish friends in a bar and debated whether you can have beer for breakfast. It seems you can, at least when Sweden is up against Spain.
I was hoping that Spanish star
David Villa, who scored a hat-trick in the game against Russia, would get a heatstroke or somehow not be able to play. He was playing and was amazing as always.
Sweden lost the game in overtime. This meant we didn’t just have beer for breakfast. We had beer for lunch and dinner too, all the time wishing we were Dutch!
