Model Homes: Countless magazine covers, photo shoots on exotic islands, Adrien Brody moments--yes, the life of a supermodel can be sweet. But true happiness hits Alek Wek, Carolyn Murphy and Frederique van der Wal where they live.
She’ll always have Paris, but the place this all-American beauty truly covets in a Santa Monica cottage by the sea. At 17, shortly after she began modeling, Carolyn Murphy left her native Panama City, Fla., for Paris, where she spent the summer doing fashion shoots while living with a family in the city's desirable Seventh Arrondissement, home to the Eiffel Tower and the Musee d'Orsay. "That was my introduction to Europe and to bourgeois, old French money", she recalls. "And I loved it." After nearly a decade as a top model--most recently, as the face of Estee Lauder cosmetics and Harry Winston jewelry-- Murphy, 29, still appreciates the luxe life. But as she reminisces amid soothing earth tones in her Japanese Craftsman--style home in a canyon above Santa Monica, it's clear that these days she favors a more bohemian vibe. Wearing a floral skirt and a turquoise sweater, with her two Boston terriers, Dookie and Algebra, nuzzling her bare feet, she's the picture of laid-back Left Coast cool. The same could be said of Murphy's house, in a rustic beachside alcove just a 20-minute drive, but a thousand psychic miles away, from the grit of L.A. She moved here from upstate New York two years ago with Dylan, now 2 1/2, her daughter with ex-husband Jake Schroeder, whom she met while vacationing in Costa Rica, where he worked at a surfing school. Her current boyfriend, Brandon Boyd, lead singer of the platinum-selling rock band Incubus, moved in last spring. When he pops in to say goodbye before heading out, they exchange "i love yous" like besotted high school steadies. "Brandon and I were friends for five months before we started dating" she says. "It just" - she smiles - "works extremely well." So does their commingling of households. The three- bedroom residence was built in the mid-1990s after the the previous owner decided to raze the original 1930s structure in favor of a flowing design based on the principles of feng shui. Murphy embraced its raw simplicity: The clean look allows us to to add our own different touches and be expressively different. From upstairs to downstairs, the operative word is eclectic: A statue of Ganesh, the elephant-headed Hindu god, stands sentry at the front door; ceramic Halloween masks adorn the. master bedroom; and graceful Mies van der Rohe lounge chair shares the den with an anatomy chart from a Berlin medical school. Murphy credits her idiosyncratic style to her maternal grandmother, who preferred a mix of pragmatism and panache . My nana has her regular china but also uses collectibles from a Virginia farm, says Murphy. Her home is a balance--eclectic but tasteful. Murphy, who already balances modeling and motherhood, eager to add acting to the mix. ( She made a promising 1999 debut in Liberty Heights, in which she played the love interest of Adrien Brody.) It's the ideal time to get started again, she says. I have a good foundation with my family, my friends, my home. There's a lot of love around me.
