Tom Ford's Mediterranean fantasies
The new Estée Lauder summer makeup collection is jet-set sexy!
By Rita Silvan
When he's not enticing actresses to strip for the camera, Tom Ford is busy designing his upcoming menswear collection and creating must-have cosmetics for Estée Lauder. His latest collection, Azurée, follows his reinvention of Youth Dew Amber Nude last fall.
This time around, Ford is all about channelling Mediterranean glamour through Estée Lauder's original cult fragrance of the same name from the '70s. Think Côte d'Azur: white pebble beaches, European and Middle Eastern playboys and playgirls, private villas and too many great parties to count. And what to wear to all the chic happenings? Why, a sexy bikini and Estée Lauder's new 23-piece Azurée Collection, of course!
ELLE Canada: What was your inspiration for the Azurée Collection?
Tom Ford: "In the beginning, I went through the Estée Lauder archives and found vintage packaging from the '60s and '70s in really luxe shades of blue. These blues were the main inspiration for the Azurée Collection, as were the decades they came from. I've always been inspired by that era of experimentalism and freedom of expression."
EC: How would you describe the Azurée look?
TF: "The Azurée colour palette reflects the look of the natural glow on the skin after lying in the sun on a pristine beach. The packaging conveys the warm blue waters of the ocean."
EC: What is your favourite item in the collection?
TF: "As with the Amber Nude Collection, my favourite piece is a multi-use face highlighter. You can use it anywhere you want for a little bit of shine. You can use it on the arches of eyebrows, the cheeks, the lips and, if you're careful, just down the bridge of the nose. It architecturally highlights those areas and adds some dimension to the face."
EC: What was the rationale for including body products in the collection?
TF: "Fragrance is a very sensual thing for me, and I love that this scent is meant to be worn all over the body, not just on certain points. It also smells a little like the ocean, which is what this collection is really all about.
EC: What kind of woman should wear the Azurée Collection?
TF: "This is for the woman who travels -- or who desires to travel -- to sexy, remote beaches."
EC: What was shooting the advertising campaign like?
TF: "We used photographer Craig McDean and model
Carolyn Murphy again, but this time it was done out in Montauk [N.Y.] in the dead of winter. I felt so bad for her because she was in a swimsuit -- and freezing!"
