It took a good couple of weeks to pin down the elusive Catherine McNeil. If we hadn’t spotted her in the Dior, Elie Saab and Jean Paul Gaultier Couture shows we might have begun to think she’d gone AWOL again. In 2009, at the height of her fame, when hers was the name on everyone’s lips, Catherine was a no-show on the runways, possibly sparking exactly the type of controversy she’d left the fashion world to escape in the first place. Just as quickly as she had risen, booking campaigns for Jean-Paul Gaultier, Louis Vuitton and Versace, walking for Dior, Chanel and Givenchy, and dating some of the hottest girls in the industry, she disappeared. But now Cat’s back walking and the fashion world has fallen in love with her all over again.

It’s 8am when we call her in her New York apartment, but she doesn’t mind, she’s already awake. Today is her first day off in weeks, following the Couture shows, and she’s going to have a quiet one: “At the moment I’m re-organising my closet! Then I’ll go to the gym and walk my dogs, that’s what my days off are like.” She’s softly-spoken with a sweet Australian accent, not entirely what you’d expect to hear after seeing her super fierce stride and tomboyish street style. She used to want to be a motorcycle mechanic, applying for an apprenticeship at the age of 14, “The guy just looked at me and said, ‘You don’t look like the mechanic type,’ and sent me away. So that never really happened,” she laughs.

CATHERINE McNeil is back on top of the modelling pack.

After a self-imposed modelling hiatus from 2009-2011, she's all over billboards with a host of new campaigns - including signing on as the new face of Australian brand Kookai.

It follows recent campaigns for DKNY, Prada, Christian Dior eyewear and Giorgio Armani beauty. Earlier this year McNeil walked in 40 runway shows during the Autumn/Winter 2013/14 season in New York, London, Milan and Paris.

"I took a break as I was thrown into the modelling world at 13," McNeil said.

"I just felt I needed to take time out to spend time with close friends and family."

McNeil, now 24, said she and her younger sister grew up wearing Kookai and she enjoyed shooting the campaign in Mexico: "Working with Australian designers and photographers there's a much more relaxed feel on set and it makes me really feel like I am home.

"Shoots in New York and the US are always very intense and the crews are always huge. It's not so personal - Australians tend to make everything a little more intimate on sets."

Robert Cromb, co-founder of Kookai, said McNeil was perfect for the new campaign, replacing Nicole Trunfio who has represented the brand for the past three seasons.

"We wanted to move in a slightly new direction this season and we were excited Catherine was back on the scene. She had the right look for what we had in mind," Cromb said.

Kookai is moving away from its signature bodycon dresses into a more fashion-forward collection that focuses on separates.

"It's a process of evolution and a good way of selling that message is by using a new girl," Cromb said.

"This season it's a little bit more about ensembles rather than single pieces, whereas in previous summers we've focussed on dresses and jumpsuits. It's not just dresses or basics anymore."

Also, frockwriter has an article up regarding the Kookai campaign, with pictures supplied by Kookai.
