Chanel F/W 2017.18 : Cara Delevingne & Lily-Rose Depp by Karl Lagerfeld

While I was rather fond of the studio-shot Pre-Fall campaign with Vittoria Ceretti & Natalie Westling, the outcome of this is just embarrassing. Considering the extravagant set Karl produced for the show, I am stunned (even though I really shouldn't be) at how lifeless, bland, uninspired and sterile this campaign is. Dumbfounded!

I love Cara Delevingne, but I was expecting to see Cara Taylor.

They could have done something pretty epic considering the theme of the collection. What a shame! This looks like a loobook.

I feel like they've been investing alot on the runway shows and not enough in the campaigns. The show is always expensive and major, while the campaings fall flat.

Lol, what's this? I'm so tired of Karl and his obsession with these girls

I actually like Lily's shots but Cara's are such duds. For such a great collection and so many ways to play up the space theme this is disappointing.

My feelings exactly. Cara and that awful hairstyle shouldn't be in any fashion campaign, there were so many possibilities for this and its just..boring.

Karl Lagerfeld is more uninspired than... me atm. OMG. Not even trying anyone could do a campaign as terrible and BORING as this one... It's pure rubbish. And Cara and 2018 in the same sentence... OMG.

I love Karl and he'll always be my soft spot, but my gawd, he lost it such a long time ago...

Carine+Chanel has been just an awful period for the brand. The worst of its history since Karl is there.

Nobody's dares to tell Karl the truth. His shoots are surreal tableaux vivants, it's insane. This Chanel campaign is down there with LV for the absolute worst campaigns of te season.

It's so frustating...

I love Karl. He is my favorite designer and for me, the best even above YSL (i don't count the great masters like Balenciaga, Dior, Chanel, Vionnet). I think that for a man of his age and after such a long career, his collections are so beyond. A lot of designers, even younger than him who started after don't have the same energy in their work. Even mlle Chanel who died at 91 years old didn't have that much influence in the last 10 years of her career.

We are witnessing the last few years of his career and this is quite a moment in fashion history.

It's kinda sad to not see that translate in the ads. Him shooting the campaigns is pure ego at this point.
I would love for him to let the big photographers do the campaigns or even try to make them more iconic. It's really frustrating.

I don't really feel like Carine is really that good. Even Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele manage to deliver iconic campaigns with the photographers she is working with. I really don't understand what Carine is doing.

This is a totally missed opportunity. Alt & White really took advantage in that opportunity. They made flawless choices and campaigns that are still important for Chanel even today.

Chanel is so fun! Their shows are beyond fun and this is not even close to it.

Oh Lola, always making allowances for Karl! :P Not being snarky at all, but I find your loyalty very cute.

Carine can be lazy at times (any of her HB edits), but the styling isn't what's wrong here, it's the photography. Her only mistake is not pushing him hard enough for something fresh. If Karl could put an ounce of his runway presentation effort into his campaigns, it could be a hit season after season. It could even surpass Klein's epic D&G campaigns, imo. Imagine a print shot of the Chanel woman pushing a trolley in the supermarket?

^^
I can't help it. I love him.

The thing is that i find his photography pretty basic. It's not a critique, it's just what it is. Yes, in the 90's and early 00's he tried to experiment (i remember a flawless pop Fendi campaign) but his photography (even more in his campaign) is very simple. Most if not all the Chanel campaigns have the same composition.

But not pushing him hard enough for something fresh is a big mistake because that's what her job is. They work on this together. That's the least we can expect.
Their first campaign together with Freja and the Photomaton was great. Kinda racy and exciting. Then, she pushed Saskia and Joan and the campaign they did on the french riviera was flawless...
Since then, Maybe the one with Stella for S/S 2013 but that's it.

Karl is not Meisel or I&V. I think he really needs the influence of his collaborators to deliver good campaigns. That's my only theory I've loved all the Chanel campaigns he did with Alt and Alex White. For Fendi, i'm ok to totally blame it on him...Even if Charlotte Stockdale and her love for insta girls is not helping.

This is inexcusable. So extremely bad. Why have two socialites who do nothing for the clothes? Is it really only for the marketing? Karl needs to leave and take Carine with him, both have become insufferable.

I imagined this campaign with Cara Taylor and Birgit Kos in a very futuristic setting and was so excited but deep down I just knew it would have a random socialite in it.
