Chanel Iman

Chanel switching to IMG is a good move...I'm still a fan no matter what  Go Girl! :woot:

wow ... i havent been in a couple of days and i was just going to ask, "was it a good move to go to supreme?" ... and i didnt have to because she is at img!!! im so happy for her!!!

she will be in good hands, a move to a powerhouse like img or next was imminent & can instantly revive her career ... and IMG are specialists in moving people from middle management to executive superstars ... thankfully she's not past her peak and IMG can still do somthing that will take her to a whole nutha level!!!!

and as for the person who said she isnt HF ... she's definitely more HF than she is commerical and the fact that she has walked for almost every major house in paris & milan is evidence of that ... go chanel!!!!

i was just at the img wbsite and her show card still isnt up, but i was surprised by the amount of black girls IMG has in their showcards .... lots!!!! dont get me wrong its excellent, but i've never so many black girls in 1 agency, even in the 90s when black girls ruled the runway, there werent this many at one agency ...

so so so so so pumped for chanel!!!

Picking up from where I left off...

Appearing in the catalog, walking the show or being in one of their print campaigns and doing in store appearances, TV commercials, signings, doing photo calls and live TV interviews representing a mainstream brand are 2 very different things.

The HF industry love a certain level of anonymity and distances itself from celebrity. Gisele is Gisele....she is, was and always will be a big deal. She semi retired from HF at the height of her popularity in order to make more money. Chanel hasn't been getting much work editorially, i have been following her since 2006 and it has never been this bad., she only walked 17 shows last season and didn't show up at couture. I love her but it was pretty clear that she was starting to fade.

I think she's had a great run so far and i'm not saying she'll never be doing a show again or appaear in US Vogue but the VS gig is going to put people off. The HF crowd never thought of touching Adriana, Ale, Ana BB and others before Tisci cast Adriana and Prada did their thing last season. Pretty soon, things will go back to normal again.
So in response to my comment debunking the whole tainting issue by noting that Raquel, Natasha, Lara and others have done the VSFS and appeared in the catalog and continued to get high fashion jobs, you are saying that it is the local appearances and TV interviews that taint a model? So Karl Lagerfeld can overlook the highly visible and talked about VSFS and the widely distributed catalogs, but he draws the line at doing to a store launch in Dallas and appearing on a morning chat show in Boston? If I were him I would be embarrassed to admit to knowing that kind of detail about a model. BTW Laetitia Casta, who was a full blown angel, is another example, and no disrespect to her does not fit into the "Gisele is Gisele" box which I will get to later, she has gotten French Vogue and other Vogue covers and closed couture shows while she was a VS angel, YSL at that, and after she left VS.

Re celebrity, the fashion industry LOVES celebrity, if the "HF industry love a certain level of anonymity and distances itself from celebrity," then why will they will give a campaign not only to a celeb, but to a celebrity's buck-tooth, cross-eyed kid?

The "HF crowd never thought of touching Adriana, Ale, et. al." because they cannot afford them. Between VS and other lucrative contracts, these women make $5 million+ a year and they don't get out of bed for just anyone. However, they have and will negotiate their fee for directional designers like Miuccia Prada, Marc Jacobs, Ricardo Tisci and Nicholas Ghesquiere. Now it will be interesting to see how this season shakes out because while I don't expect any of the VS models to walk 50 shows, I won't be surprised if their presence goes beyond directional designers. Since Miranda and Doutzen are pregnant, this really boils down to Alessandra and to a lesser degree Adriana. Along with Chanel Iman, Adriana is doing launches and will not be as available. Also, I don't think that Adriana is as hungry as Alessandra which is not necessarily a bad thing.

You wanna know why "Gisele is Gisele?" Gisele is Gisele because she is a talented and hard working model who hooked up with famous men and worked for Victoria's Secret. Again the talent and charisma are there, but one or both of those qualities apply to Natalia, Daria, Carmen and Raquel, but it is VS and the famous partners that propelled Gisele into supermodeldom over comparably charismatic and photogenic models.

Models don't get paid for editorial work. Gisele, who was the biggest earner among the angels...was getting editorials and covers regularly that she wasn't getting paid for and she bothered to get out of bed because she was in demand. No one was interested in Adriana and Ale whose own high fashion careers have stalled before going commercial.

They might have had higher fees for campaigns but not by that much and we're certainly not talking VS numbers. Gisele had the goodwill and the support of practically every important editor, designer and photographer, her situation was/is in no way comparable to theirs or Chanel's.

I believe Adriana is still making the same amount of money at VS and yet, she has a presence in eds and campaigns now because there's an interest in her as a model more than there was before. It's not like she's suddenly desperate for money, she even switched agencies to get more high fashion work.

I agree with your points about editorials. Models, even at Gisele's level, do editorials for the exposure and to curry favor with photographers in hopes that when a campaign is being cast that the photographer will pick her or put in a good word for her. My comment about "not getting out of bed for just anyone," still applies, in addition to making concessions for directional designers, they do likewise for certain editors and photographers.

I was addressing your assertion that "once a model does VS they are "tainted" and their HF stock declines." When I quoted Alessandra and Adriana I was restating the names you used, but this aspect of the conversation is really more pertinent to Chanel, Doutzen, Karolina, Abbey Lee, Aminata, Maryna, Barbara Palvin and a few others. It really does not apply to Alessandra, Adriana, Candice, Miranda, Marisa or Heidi because their pre-VS presence in high fashion ranged from non-existent to smallish, so you can't say conclusively that they were shunned by high fashion because of their ties to VS. Now I would not be at all surprised if some photographer, designer or editor dinged some random, unknown model and said something like, "she is too Victoria's Secret" as a euphemism for "too sexy," "too girl next door," "not mysterious," "too sultry," "too commercial," "not edgy," "too pretty," "too smiley," etc., but that is very different from a real life situation involving a model like Chanel. Now I am not saying going forward that some decision-maker will not say, "No, I don't want Chanel Iman, she is too VS," but had the VS association not been part of their consciousness, the comment would be, "No, I don't want Chanel Iman, she is not edgy enough." And in the event that there are two or three decision-making goof balls that will shun a model for her VS ties, that is offset 100x over by the money and extra exposure that comes with VS. I am willing to bet that if Chanel continues on her current trajectory with VS (which is not a given), that in a couple of years from now, Chanel will have added to her high fashion resume, but rather than a bunch of "regular" high fashion gigs, it will be a few high profile / high quality gigs including covers, and you best believe that VS is a factor because it raises your profile, recognizability and dare I say commercialism which is not a bad thing.

At the end of the day, I have yet to see anything that supports that a model is tainted in the high fashion realm if she is associated with VS, yet there is considerable evidence that contradicts that supposition. :flower:

Chanel Iman Signs With IMG

(NEW YORK) The start of the casting week wouldn’t be complete without at least one thunderous agency power move by a supermodel. Chanel Iman officially joins the board of IMG, following a brief seven month stint at Supreme Model Management. “Everything about Chanel Iman defines fashion and beauty,” said IMG’s SVP Ivan Bart. “We are very excited to manage her career moving forward.”

The 19 year-old Iman is one of the most recognizable American faces following her impressive four-year work portfolio that includes appearances on every single major runway and global editorial. Last November, Iman signed a three-year contact with Victoria’s Secret, further increasing her presence on a national scale.
