its way to catalog and seem washed out color again like his typical Bv ads ...why do such color full clothes top always then go sad intelectual washed out light in his ads like he is some depressed painter endlessly caught in a fall or smog skylight.
It's a low key antidepressant ad instead.

What I hate the most with Blazy is his Peter Pan complex. He is basically a 41 year toddler.
He sees everything under the eyes of a child. Everything needs to be colorful, happy, simple, childish, naive. Innocent.
You can tell he was the student bringing an apple to the teacher as a child and he still does it with the Wertheimer.

A bit like Jacquemus I must say. "the world is fine tralalala, be happy tralalala, clap tralalala".
I liked how Karl Lagerfeld connected his vision of Chanel with our current times and making comments with his collections and campaigns. Chanel doesn't need to worry, there will not be single scandal with Matthieu, they are safe with this visual snooze fest.
He is a people-pleaser after all, not a radical.

The girl in suit looks like she was running away with some stolen clothes. People need to pay me a lot for me to walk out of my home with this fit.

Imagine you are going to succeed the most legendary designers ever (Karl and Chanel herself) and your brain can only come up with something like this… do you think he’s proud? Do you think he sees his limitations?
A new chef joins a 3-michelin star restaurant. His new signature dish is the best seller in his neighborhood Italian restaurant: soggy spaghetti with tomato sauce.

Babe, that’s not even the problem.

You can do a studio pics and the result can be wonderful too: Avedon, Penn, Meisel, Helmut, CVW…

And you can shot in location and the result can be terrible as well. The fact of introducing movement and a location doesn’t make it good, like you can see here.

Some Karl campaigns were amazing. The ones with MCB in Biarritz, the ones with Angela, the ones with Daria in LA… MB only wishes.
You're literally comparing 40+ years of campaigns to One Campaign. And also naming a Bunch of dead photographers.

Some of them are amazing, Others are TRULY atrocious and 1000% worse than this.

Spring/Summer 2017 With Arizona Muse masking ridiculous faces.
Fall/Winter 2013 - Knitting in Space
Fall/Winter 2016 - The Bad Superimposed Graphics.
Cruise 2016 - 3 depressed white women sat under a tree.
PreFall 2015 - Cara Delevigne, Pharell and that Kid in Lederhosen.
Pre Fall 2010 - Mirte Maas struggling to sit on a chair.

Not to forget all the TERRIBLE images with Kristen Stewart from Paris/Dallas and onward.

Give Mathieu a break. He is ONE campaign in with a bunch of people above him also adding their two cents, which Karl didnt have to deal with.

Peter Pan complex. 10000000% ......the comic´s and child like stuff in order to hide behind this as selling emotion in a cold arty farty context to show its still serious fashion and worth every 10 k they charge.

also what does the galaxy set and Chanel is all women have t do with the summer house of coco and being in the trees and on the COCO´S bed with shoes and jumping from the stairs ?

these are fun to look at

the shot of loli on the bed is soooo so beautiful

tbh the kind of crunchy looking cacti etc foliage does not work with this collection for me, i wish they stuck to those beautiful interiors

but also.. slightly missed opportunity to use the amazing space set / theme.. alas.. these are niceee!

The French house described the campaign as a continuation of the “conversation” between Blazy and Coco Chanel grounded in their shared masculine-feminine aesthetic, with a blend of androgynous tailoring and richly embellished day suits and evening wear.

“It revolves around love, freedom and movement,” Chanel said. “Everything has been imagined for playing, layering and inventing. For composing one’s own language.”

Curious to what Coco is saying to Blazy ...probably : Get out of my house now!! 😂

This campaign doesn’t surprise me from him!! His taste levels are very mid & pedestrian!! Specially for a brand like Chanel!! This could’ve passed for Bottega and very much looks like a Bottega campaign but for Chanel it misses the mark!! People need to stop making excuses for him!! They snatched him up from Bottega where he was doing ok for the level of brand he was working on for what?? FOR THIS?!?!? He doesn’t have taste!! Why are the colours washed out???!!!
And yes it’s not the worst thing you will have ever seen!! But being underwhelming is not a prize either!!

because Alec Soth light of photography is like that 99% of the time he is more of a documentary style photographer the poses are always same with or with out movement with him its not about the clothes also from his Gucci ad to Bottega´s to now Chanel
wrong choice of everything

its like asking a photographer that shoots for a newspaper to come and shoot a chanel ad he won't care about narrative of chanel or clothes or why a bag has to sell etc lol

There is a misunderstanding...
when I was little, I had thought that a strong woman needed to be dressed like a boy and jumped as high as a boy (until puberty hit).
As I aged, I realized that a strong, especially independent woman, should be dressed however that pleases herself, boyish or feminine, depending on her mood. But the "strong" part is the way she carries herself.
I think that Coco was one of the woman who carried herself with confidence, rather than dressing in clothes that were ill-fit.
MB appears to misunderstand this.

I don't mind the campaign too much to be honest. I've never though Chanel campaigns were AMAZING. Well at least since the early 2000s and maybe some exceptions afterwards. Everything has pretty much been said, I get that they want express "joy" and smiling but I don't like the chosen group shots.

The shot on the bed is gorgeous. Would have liked to see that execution at Valentino.

With that said, this write up is so pretentious "conversation between Blazy and Coco Chanel". I actually giggled reading it because I though @PDFSD was being funny. I am all for codes and message mode when selling luxury goods. It was my favorite part when I worked in luxury retail. Karl was masterful at it, but I find this to be very corny.

Agree...
Coco took from the boys but never in a compromising way to the female body and the life of her type of women, that valued freedom of movement & to do as she pleased, not to mimic being a male, even when she worn direct male clothes it was to say this looks just as good or better on a woman and the garment is practical for a women's lifestyle as well with some tweaking :)

Chanel because she was lean /skinny the slightly roomy feel was more a gesture not a box over a lean body like Blazy does, its so 80´s and not fluid.

Besides his love for overcomplexing the fabrics and details and layers & cuts and prints for which he then tries to compensate with ads like this to show how effortless his design proposals are in likeness to the original Chanel, while most of the clothes give the opposite of effortless chic.

contrived performative chic i would call his era.

sometimes i am bloody serious :) .......& just passing on the message like a good fashion influencer :)

I have seen more terrible campaigns from Chanel but the problem for me lies in not using a fashion photographer.

A fashion photographer knows the balance between a manufactured moment and a spontaneous moment.

That balance is not right here.
Yes they tried to evoke joy but the best shots are the ones evoking serenity.

It would have been better if the were put in situations.

The shot of Loli in the bed is an homage to Linda in Karl’s home for the 1991 Couture campaign?

Very hits and misses. A bit disappointed.

I hope and pray that he will have a permanent fashion photographer. And please, someone else than anyone else who shot for Chanel in the past 5 years, Meisel included.
