interview/biography from: www.charlbidean.com
Charlbi Dean was born in Cape Town on the 5 Feburary 1990 to Joanne & Johan Kriek. Her first taste of modelling came at the tender age of six when she started off doing television commercials and children’s fashion catalogues.
“My mother was a model when she was younger but it was my father’s idea for me to get involved in the weird and wonderful world of modelling and fashion,” she smiles.
Charlbi was discovered at just 12 years old when a model scout walked into her current agency, Alfa Model Management, with pictures of models who had been doing TV commercials and kid’s catalogues.

“I took one look at her and I knew she was special,” said her agent Archar Head from Alfa Model Management. “I asked to see her immediately and slowly built up her confidence. Before we knew it she was making waves on the international scene.”
Her family commitments required her to change schools every two years and after making her big break for Italian Vogue at 12-years old, her father decided it would be best for her to quit regular school and take on home schooling instead.
“I was missing out on a lot of classes and couldn’t keep taking off and trying to catch up.”
Charlbi is currently on a gap year and will continue her Matric studies on her return to South Africa next year.
“At first modelling was just a part time thing. But when the international travelling and commitments began I realised it was something I’ve always wanted to do.”
At just 14 Charlbi took two months off home school to spend time in Tokyo. “Going overseas alone at such a young age was very scary for me but I learnt so much about the industry during that time and I know if I hadn’t gone through with it I might not have gotten as far as I have today.”
Soon after her return to South Africa from Tokyo Charlbi packed her bags and headed to New York, where she spent two more months doing castings, shoots and networking. She was accepted into a great agency very shortly after arriving in New York and shot with world-class photographers David Sims and Alexi Hay.
It wasn’t long before Charlbi landed the United Colors of Benetton campaign as well as the Monaco fragrance campaign. She has also worked in London, Barcelona, France, Milan Turkey and has done shoots for SA Elle, SA Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Dutch Elle, German Glamour, Levi’s and Guess? campaigns and has been in runway shows for the likes of Ralph Lauren and Gucci, among many others.

She recently walked away with the coveted Marie Claire model of the year award and was named as the “face” of Gavin Rajah’s couture collection, which debuted at Paris Fashion Week in July.
“Charlbi is the hottest export to ever come from our shores,” says Archar. She accounts her blessings to the support of her mother and father.
“They’ve been there for me from day one. I admire my parents because of their determination and support. My family makes me who I am.”
She says the hardest part about the job is leaving her family behind every time she has to board a plane to fulfil her international modelling commitments but the travelling, socialising and the experience makes up for it.
She says during the busy times she does up to twelve castings a day and says she doesn’t think she’ll ever get over the rejection factor.
“I feel like I’m being judged constantly. I know that I’ll never get the job for every casting I go to but having to deal with rejection is very difficult. I try to forget about it but it’s not easy at all. I guess it teaches you to be grateful when work does come along and in the end the hard work eventually pays off.”

When she’s not strutting her stuff on the catwalk or in front of the cameras Charlbi says she’s just a normal girl like everyone else.
“When I’m not working I love hanging out with my friends. I also think its really important to spend quality time with my family and in between shoots and fashion shows overseas I enjoy watching movies, going to festivals and sometimes just sitting around in front of the TV with a pizza and some of my favourite sweet treats.”

She also loves dancing, singing, drama and painting and describes herself as driven, hard-working, passionate, bubbly, fun-loving, caring and optimistic. During her spare time in the summer months in Cape Town you can find her hanging out at Ignite, Caprice, Madame Zingara’s or Primi Piatti in Camps Bay.
Although she sees herself modelling for many more years to come Charlbi admits she would one day like to pursue an acting career. “I’ve always loved drama and acting so once this (the modelling) slows down I would like to move to Los Angeles to try my hand at acting. I definitely want to do an acting class within the next two years.”
