Charlene Almarvez is Ford Supermodel of the World Philippines 2009
Charlene Louise 'Chat' Almarvez, 16-year-old La Salle-CSB student from Laguna, will be the Philippine representative in the Ford Models' Supermodel of the World 2010 competition to be held this January in Sao Paolo, Brazil.
She earned that privilege after winning during last night's Ford Supermodel of the World Philippines 2009 search held at the SMX Convention Center Hall 2.
Chat competed against 9 other gorgeous Pinay models including two former Binibining Pilipinas candidates.
In the Top 3 was former Binibining Pilipinas-World 2008 titleholder Janina San Miguel. I must admit, she was so awesome last night, but not good enough to beat statuesque, stylish and very Pinay-looking Chat Almarvez.
Mary Tiffany Jones, a candidate of Binibining Pilipinas 2009, also competed in the said contest which was a part of the still-ongoing Philippine Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010.
Almarvez ,who's turning 17 on January, will compete against 50+ international winners from different countries and if she wins, she'll receive a modeling contract worth $250,000 with Ford Models.
Two notable Filipina finalists of Ford Supermodel of the World competition was Mimilanie 'Melanie' Marquez who won as 1st Runner Up in 1986 and Sharon 'Charo' Ronquillo as 2nd Runner Up in 2006.

Although 2009 Super Model Philippines winner Charlene Louise Alagon Almarvez is better known as CHAT, she is ANYTHING BUT chatty. She admits it readily and even calls herself ‘mahiyain’ (shy). Thankfully, she was in the mood to tell me her story on the post-Christmas afternoon we met.
And it is a SHORT story. But I mean that in a GOOD way!
It’s short because Chat Almarvez is ONLY 16 years old with approximately 3 months 7 months of modeling experience as of press time. On the October night she won Super Model Philippines 2009, she had only ONE WEEK 5 months of modeling work on her profile!!!

Lest that make you think modeling is easy, let me tell you that it takes A LOT of skill to look good in ANY outfit. Have you tried sashaying up and down a ramp for 1 hour in 5-inch stilettos pretending your feet are okay? It takes LOAAADS of practice PLUS a few charlie horses. But for Chat, it seems like she was born for the catwalk. To have achieved so much as a model at such a young age and in so little time is FABOO if you ask me!
First of all, Chat is a living skyscraper at 5′9½”. Her thin frame makes her seem even taller and when she puts on the kind of footwear mentioned in the previous paragraph her head disappears in the clouds. Unfortunately, thinness is still a desirable trait among ramp models; Chat Almarvez had to drop 6 kilos to get down to her current 50.
Slim as she is, Chat lamented that the competition was even skinnier so she’s been tasked to shave off half an inch from her 24.5 inch waist. But, if it’s okay for Manny Pacquiao to lose weight for his fights, I don’t see a problem with competitive models who are naturally thin like Chat doing the same as long as they are exercising. Chat also didn’t seem to be skimping on food too much; during our CHAT (LOL) she actually ordered a FRAPPE with all the sugar and fat!!! But she wisely got a small one.
Me? I had to settle for an Americano with low fat milk and NO sugar… GRRRR…

In getting to know Chat Almarvez, I discovered that our 2009 Supermodel had no dreams of becoming a model much less being a ’super’ one. But in high school when she began to sprout up like wild mongo bean, her parents began to encourage her in that direction. Dad Taddeus Almarvez, a police officer and Mom Leah Alagon, a contractor could see that her height and look made her perfect for modeling so they kept pushing her and even enrolled her in special classes.
It was in May 2009 when someone else, someone KEY, saw the same thing in Chat Almarvez – Fashion Director Cata Figueroa spotted her when she was a Sagala for a Flores de Mayo parade in her hometown of Laguna . He got her number and promised to call back. True to his word, Direk Cata called to schedule Chat Almarvez for some training on walking. Because of her experience as a majorette in high school, she picked up fast on the moves and after one day of training, Direk Cata said she was ready for her first challenge: the go-see auditions for Fashion Week.
Now, THAT turned out to be a piece of cake! Chat got selected to be one of the mannequins for the October 2009 Fashion Week shows.
Next challenge: the try-outs for Supermodel of the Philippines 2009. And then she won the darned thing! I TOLD you it was a short story, LOL!!!
But I promise you it won’t be a short one for too long! Winning the local competition guarantees her a career in the Philippines; but facing the next challenge which is the Supermodel of the World in Brazil in January 2010 might mean open doors for Chat Almarvez in the international scene. New York and Paris could be a false eyelash away. In fact, it doesn’t really matter win or lose; if Chat Almarvez catches the eye of the top brass at the Ford Modeling Agency, she’s got it MADE!

Right now, Chat is taking it easy and just focusing on exercise and diet. She has gone on a leave of absence from the De La Salle College of St. Benilde where she is a freshman student in Business Administration. She’s also spending as much time as she can with family and friends before she departs on January 1, 2010 for New York where she will undergo one week training under Audie Joey Espino (one of the the moving force behind Philippine Fashion Week) and Charo Ronquillo (who placed 3rd in the Supermodel of the World 2006). Fashion designers Lyle Ibanez and Raul Ramirez will take charge of her glamoroso summer and winter outfits which she will wear during the competition. After training is over she flies to Sao Paolo, Brazil to face 50 other top mannequins from all over the world. The finals are on January 14, 2010.

Chat Almarvez always wears these ballers from her DadI asked Chat Almarvez if she was taking anything special with her on the road to the 2010 Supermodel of the World. She showed me two ballers. Yes, I repeat. TWO BALLERS. A yellow one and a black one both given to her by her Dad when she was still in high-school. Chat said she couldn’t really explain why, but whenever she would wear the ballers, good things would happen to her. I don’t believe too much in the lucki-ness of things but I am a fierce believer that Dads who are close to their daughters end up raising WINNERS!!!
So Chat, go out there and do the Philippines proud

Supermodel of the World: São Paulo Day 2
The sun finally came out in São Paulo for this second day of Supermodel of the World. It was an early start to a long day in which the finalists were measured, “Polaroided,” and finally test photographed. There’s a video crew on hand interviewing the girls for a making of Supermodel of the World video. Needless to say the second day of Supermodel of the World has been eventful.
