Chinese Styles

i'm with VampireCA on this one - the collection is chinese influenced since the mandarin collar is the prototype from which the nehru (and all other derivatives) evolved. you can see the nehru lacks the side closures and has more in common with the Mao Suit, which preceded it. the qipao / cheongsam were first imposed onto the Chinese by Manchu conquerers since the 17th century, and the mandarin collar is a modern day remnant of that style.

Perhaps it is impossible to determine the absolute origin of such ancient designs, for I still believe that there are styles like these in ancient Tibet, Mongolia, Hungary (and they are worn even today), and elsewhere in the world. However, over the centuries, both regions have been part of China. So it comes full circle! :flower:

youre right it does come full circle, because the manchus and mongolians peoples of the north were the first to adopt this dress code and so maybe it should be credited to them, but since manchus conquered china and fully integrated into the society it's recognized as an export of the more prominent nation i guess. as for the Hungarians, i think a few perks of their costume are also the influence of the Manchu reign that dispersed throughout central asia, russia, all the way to vienna austria centuries ago. wouldnt be surprised.

Something tells me these styles are probably older than recorded history. :flower: Thank you so much for further insight into these origins, ecec. Ancient clothing fascinates me!

i had no idea hungarians had this kinda style before you mentioned it! lol. i too love ethnic costumes of all kinds, and there are 56 ethnicities in china with their distinct way of dress, it'd be cool if designers incorporate elements of these styles into modern fashion! :woot:

I absolutely agree with you about incorporating traditional elements in modern clothing!! :woot: I'm carefully watching the Italian contingent as they move into the Indian marketplace. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will happen in China too - that designers honor the extraordinary artistry in these amazing, ancient cultures.

And there will never be enough silk or bamboo in the world. :D
