VERSACE FAVOURS THE KANE
spacer.gif
IT'S fortunate for Christopher Kane that he is inspired by strong, powerful women. Since the young designer was unleashed upon the fashion world last month, they've been descending en masse with Donatella Versace heading the charge. Kane's graduate collection from the prestigious Central St Martins MA Fashion course caught the magpie eye of Ms V, thanks to his ingenious reworking of Gianni Versace's Nineties heyday for a collection comprising ultra-tight, ultra-short, stretched lace creations embroidered with crystal mesh and chain links. He's been in negotiations with her ever since (having jetted to Milan to attend both her show and her after-party during Milan Fashion Week), and a Kane-Versace collaboration is imminent. The young designer plans to launch his own collection during London Fashion Week in September with the support of the Italian mega-brand, which will supply fabrics and materials. "I'm delighted to be associated with the legacy of the house, and it would be a dream come true to eventually work full time for Donatella," reveals Kane. "But we both agree that initially I should concentrate on building my own name. Working with her will without doubt make me a stronger designer and give me a competitive advantage." Anna Wintour, the imperious editor-in-chief of American Vogue, was hot on Donatella's stiletto heels, whisking the plucky Glaswegian off for a summit meeting just hours after his college catwalk debut, which won him the Harrods Award for Best Designer. As fashion fairy godmothers go, it's not a bad duo. "To have such support at this stage in my career is amazing. They have given me such encouragement and are both very inspiring," says the 23-year-old. Expect glamour-a-go-go as Kane gets set to establish his particular brand of sex, sophistication and sequins as a must-see on London's schedule, with the backing of either the New Generation or Fashion East initiatives. "My work is quite youthful and edgy. My ambition is to create a London show of a standard on a par with Paris." (March 29 2006, AM)

KANE-ING IT
spacer.gif
LONDON's most exciting new fashion name, Christopher Kane, blinded onlookers with his talent last week when he joined the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier, Hussein Chalayan and Shaun Leane for Alexander McQueen in contributing to Swarovski's Runway Rocks Tokyo show. The 23-year-old designer, who shot to fame in February with a Versace-inspired graduate collection for Central Saint Martins that put him on a fast track to the offices of both Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour, created an eye-popping 'harness' out of Swarovski crystal mesh. Entitled 'Addicted to Mesh', the piece was inspired by obscure Picasso sketches and the construction of chandeliers, he said. Over 30 leading fashion figures have created one-off pieces for this year's Runway Rocks show. (July 25 2006, AM)

I don't like his stuff, but he is definitely hugely buzed.

bondage 'spirit' has been going on for years now, not sure about this boy..

i've actually mailed Kane's swarovski bondage to a friend designer because it looks exactly like what my friend presented like three seasons ago.. :ninja:

WHOA! i saw the stuff he did for his thesis collection! AMAZING!!!!! My eye is on him!

^_^ definitely, specially that tight number with a black leather jacquet, but to me it looks like a mix of Gianni, present Atelier Versace and a bit of Balenciaga, those huge chains and small draped details made me think of Nicolas too.

It's very old versace, which is seems to huge in London right now.

Clare Tough did it better though IMO, much less cheesy.

well,it's certainly heavy on the gaudy and highly 80's looking. by looking at it all,I'm not sure if he's what he's cracked up to be.

he certainly has potential...his construction is AMAZING!!!!! Hours and hours

CSM students aren't required to do all their contruction of the MA Thesis right? If they are this guy is insane. This makes me wish I had enough money to go there for my MA...

From what I understand, the school has sewers on staff.

^no they dont have to do it themselves and there are no sewers on staff i dont know where people get that from lol.
he did his own construction for his MA it was crazy constructed, i got to look at it close up it was AMAIZING

His sewing seems quite impressive in itself. Something about this collection reminds me of Balenciaga.

amazing construction aside..i don't like it.
i think the most common mistake a younger designer can make is not knowing when to STOP.

a perfect example of that is something i've been seeing for the past month or so. a window at a luxury dept. store displaying graduating designs. they're all too much! those that aren't are too generic, and those that are creative have too much froth on them.

there is only one guy from the entire group (glenn pasco) who got it right.

A girl I know who did the MA course did all of her sewing, I'm sure she would have used some help if it was there. But I did hear from several people that the school provides technical assistance, well nevermind that.

I am really not sure about him... I think his dresses are really tacky... I can see how stylists will be into it as they are on that whole 80's trip (STILL!!!) but designers like Marios Schwab & Clare Tough have been doing this for last few seasons, and have been doing it in a much more elegant way...

23-years-old  ...

Donatella will eat him alive. Or at least brand him "Versace" forever.

As for "inspired by strong, powerful women", that must be the most worn-out fashion cliche of all times. Duh.
