Hey all - Maybe this will turn into another mute forum.

But I am curious whether people value clothing over accessories? or vice versa?

For me - I am all about accessories. I love bags + shoes + jewelry (of course).

In terms of clothing - I am happy wearing American Apparel everyday. Its the rest of the outfit that makes it.

Do accessories make the outfit?

I think accessories are crucial to outfits to make them stand out and personalise them. With that said;

If you don't have style your £££ accessories wont save you.:innocent:

I completely agree on that. Yet I also feel that on a personal note - I would rather not spend my savings on a very nice t-shirt.

Seeing as how many designer "t-shirt" companies use Anvil or American Apparel - I do not see the point in splurging on this. I rather use simple, cheap basics that fit well with nice accessories.

Thinking about this I must say that I value my clothing a higher, as they really are investment pieces and the re-sell value gets lost at once you buy them so it forces you to really think clearly about them before you buy.

I would hate to resort just to wearing cheap fabrics in jackets.

I value my clothes far more than my accessories. I do have a few bags and a ton of shoes but the main thing is...my clothes.

I agree w/ MKD I wear AA tshirts and tanks in tehs ummer w/ some skanky jeans and a nice sandal...its nice all around.

totally agree. i'd rather invest in expensive accessoires than in expensive clothing (mainly because i can't afford the second ;) )

clothes, for sure. i am def. not an accessories person. not a very ornamental person to begin with.

Clothing is far more important to me. I don't wear necklaces, bracelets, rings or any of that. During the winter months, I don't buy expensive scarves or gloves.
I like having nicer clothes, I emphasize being able to put together a decent outfit, rather than an 'okay' outfit with an overload of designer accessories.
Too many accessories irk me. I like simplicity.

Personally, accessories aren't my thing, and they never have been. On the right person, though, they can make an outfit look much better than it originally did.

See I don't have the money to spend on really expensive accessories, so I have to get less expensive ones. Yes, having accessories of value is great, but it's all about how you wear them. I'd rather see someone with a funky necklace that wasn't mass-produced over another Elsa Peretti Open Heart necklace.

And accessories are a big part of personal style-for me they are CRUCIAL because for work I can only wear black or white dress shirts and black or khaki pants or skirts, so I use it to create a look. I can do a scarf around the head for a "Rosie the Riveter" look. I used a white sash scarf to turn a long black skirt and a black Aeropostale polo into a very elegant piece.

Gosh this is hard for me. The only accessory I value most are shoes. If you have **** shoes, they spoil the whole outfit, even if it is well put together.

I don't usually wear jewelry now because I found out that they give my earholes infections and I can't really bear parting so much for accessories (other than shoes), when I can spend the same amount on a piece of clothing that I will wear more and use more often.

I guess it's accessories - shoes for me.

I like clothes more and get more passionate about them but I still think it's important to have good quality accessories, especially jewellery and leather goods. I just don't like pleather and cheap jewellery, the idea of them is off-putting to me.

i spend most on accessories.

i have a classic style, wear a lot of basics and black, and with accessories i feel like i can show my personality. i dont like to wear clothes that scream "look at me", i think it is because of my plus size.

also because my size is changing, then i think it would be stupid to buy expensive clothes.

I am about both, perhaps more accessories ... I'm a fan of the statement piece, and that can be easier to find in accessories.

^my sentiments exactly. i'm mainly concerned about accessories when i'm in a professional or formal environment - sometimes i'm constricted by the conservative nature of my industry, so a gorgeous pair of pointy-toed monk straps, quirky cufflinks, and a dashing watch are to me necessary. outside of that, i prefer being comfortable, and having quality fabrics that are cut well and inviting to the touch.

i think there are pluses to both, like you can buy a very classic article of clothing or accessory, and if it's really timeless, it can work forever and never go "out".
then of course, there are expensive "new, it" clothes and accessories (whatever you want to call them) that are fad, or not guaranteed to exactly last forever..
its really up to the person though. im not exactly an accessory person, i have a lot but i never seem to wear any of them, and i generally rpefer shopping for clothes/shoes rather than jewlery/the like. but they are both important, i think it's just personal preference.

Technically speaking, clothes are more important because they keep us warm. From a style standpoint though, it depends. Because there are statement articles of clothing but there are also statement accessories. Like for classical dress, accessories are your means of personalizing the look. But if you're already wearing a quirky outfit, accessories can be overbearing.

I'm much more of a clothing person though. Don't like all the extras.

accessories are cheaper, can make an outfit look good, can glam up old clothes, can make an old outfit look totally different,

and best of all...

Personally I love both equally although I tend to lean more towards clothes because I'm a forgetful person and I usually lose accessories more then clothes :(...

But I think people would spend more on a bag (accessory) then a top (clothing) because its more "affordable". There's no stigma against having an everyday bag but an everyday top...?

Also as snowqueen pointed out, accessories are for everyone..size isn't relevant.

This is such a hard question. In fact, I'm really struggling with it at the moment. Should I invest in good quality and expensive basic clothes? Or should I put my investments in expensive shoes, electronics, and bags? When I look at pictures of men on the sart I see men who are wearing a white shirt, skinny black jeans, clean sneakers, and a nice expensive bag. I want to mimic that. But then I see men who wear the million dollar suit with absolutely nothing in accessories but maybe an hermes wallet. Maybe it's a question of streetwear vs formal wear? But even then I think I can find exceptions.
