Coco Rocha

Here's a local newspaper article about Coco :flower:

Richmond’s It Girl

By Matthew Hoekstra - Richmond Review - October 17, 2007

Coco Rocha is inside the office at McRoberts Secondary, standing in front of principal Peter Healy. At five foot ten and with heels taller than a grande Starbucks cup, her eyes are aimed slightly downward.
Had it been a year or two earlier, this could have been a faceoff over algebra, history or a note passed in class. But today the pair is talking modelling.
The last time Healy saw his former student was the summer—being interviewed on TV.
In a few short years, the 19-year-old has become a Vogue cover model and the face of big-name campaigns, including the Yves Saint Laurent fragrance Elle. She lives in New York, graces runways in the world’s fashion hotspots and is the pride of her modelling agencies.
Today, she’s wearing Balenciaga and Rag & Bone, and is fresh off modelling stops in Russia and Paris. In McRoberts’ hallways, she’s a celebrity, attracting stares from googly-eyed boys and approving looks from girls.
She’s taller than most, but her head isn’t in the clouds. And in the school office, she’s still Coco, trading smiles and small talk with her former teachers.
Born in Toronto, Coco moved to Richmond with mom Juanita Rocha while still in diapers. Growing up on Lulu Island, Coco never dreamed of a modelling career. She became a dedicated Irish dancer, attending countless practices and competitions throughout her young life.
That’s where the whole modelling thing started.
Charles Stuart, the man behind his namesake agency, spotted Coco at an Irish dance competition that his own daughter was also a part of. Coco was a shy 14-year-old. She says he approached her and asked if she had ever considered modelling. Stuart insists he asked to speak with her mom first.
Either way, Coco had a good laugh with her friends. Modelling? PPhhtt.
Stuart wouldn’t let up. A year went by before Coco and her mom finally relented. It was at Stuart’s annual Faces West talent convention that Coco had her first modelling photos taken. She wasn’t sure what to do with her mouth, what look to cast or where to put her arms.
She spent the next summer in New York, followed by several months in Asia learning the ropes of modelling: sexy pose, kitty pose, jumping pose. By the time she returned to North America, the quiet Irish dancer had become comfortable in front of the camera and had a whopper of a portfolio.
New York came calling and she began working with renown photographer Steven Meisel. This, while she was trying to finish her last year of French immersion high school at McRoberts. She was forced to decide whether she wanted to jump into modelling full-time.
“Modelling is only a tiny span in your lifetime, especially if you want a name, so you want to go full-throttle for it when you’re young,” says Coco, sweeping her hands across a staff room table.
Her school supported her decision to go for it. Teachers would e-mail her assignments, and if she was ever in town—even for a day—she would have face-to-face meetings with her teachers.
Coco’s career took off after landing her first major cover: the March 2006 issue of Vogue Italia. She was gracing the catwalk for designers like Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Versace while still wandering the halls of McRoberts whenever she could.
A day before spring break, she returned to school to help her friends stage the school’s grad fashion show. She stayed for the last block of PE.
She graduated with her classmates and has since graced the covers of American Vogue, Time Style & Design and others. She’s been featured in advertising campaigns for Balenciaga, Lanvin, Dolce & Gabbana, Tommy Hilfiger, Gap and is the face of the Elle fragrance.
Designers call her a true beauty, a spirit, who’s become known for poses of the open-mouth variety.
Going from zero to top model in such a short time has forced Coco to grow up faster than most teenagers.
“You’re just kind of like, where’s this coming from? Mom’s not here. I now have to be much older than I am in case anything does go wrong,” she says.
But as a top model, Coco says she can’t make a mistake.
“You’re put on a pedestal and you’ve got to make sure nothing goes wrong, because if it does, you’re pretty much just sent back home, or you’re ruined. That’s why I noticed the girls are very smart. There is no room for mistakes.”
Travelling and a high-octane lifestyle is the best part of her new life. As a model, Coco sees the fashionista underground of major cities like Paris, where all tourists see are the Notre Dame and Eiffel Tower.
“I’ve already seen cities as a tourist. Now it’s fun to go back and see these cities as maybe a resident, someone who lives there and has this kind of lifestyle.”
A typical working day might be packed with four or five shows, fittings and castings. Coco treats it all as her career, not fun and games.
“To come and be prepared and not be tired in the morning is very important to me. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t go out and go crazy. Once in awhile I’ll go have an after-party for a show, but I like to come prepared, looking good.
“That’s all they need, is for a model to come late, looking horrible, you have to put so much makeup on, so much retouch, you’ve already made makeup, hair, photographer, stylist upset.”
In New York, she works out daily with a trainer and eats right all the time. Being proportioned and looking healthy—she weighs 120 pounds—is part of her job.
“I don’t think about how can I be more skinny, how can I be more of that look they’re looking for. I just have to keep saying to myself, ‘I’ve already made it. They must like something about me.’”
Backstage, Coco says there isn’t rivalry between models.
“We’re all doing the same thing, what’s the point of arguing over anything? We hang out so much in shows. I just don’t need to have a bad vibe when I know I’m going to see [them] tomorrow, and the next day,” she says.
“They’re pretty much your family and friends now. You see them 24/7.”
Coco says her success has sunk in, but she isn’t sure how far her career will go. It seems once she reaches a peak, another one presents itself. Whatever happens, she aspires to be true to herself, her family and friends.
“My whole thing is being real. I know a lot of people that are fake. In this industry there’s a lot of fake people, because to make it you have to always say yes. I’ve never liked that so much, being fake.”
Mom Juanita, a flight attendant who goes to her daughter’s shows when she can, is thrilled with how far modelling has already taken Coco.
“When she started, of course, you don’t know how it’s going to go,” she says. “As her agent says, it’s anyone’s guess as to how it will turn out. There’s thousands of girls that go to New York every season and only a few float to the top.”

DIOR'S TRIUMVIRATE: Jessica Stam is to appear in the Christian Dior campaign once again, according to an industry source. But this time, she'll be joined by fellow Canadian model Coco Rocha, plus the up-and-coming Polish model Kasia Struss. The trio was said to be shooting the spring campaign with Craig McDean in Paris on Friday. A Dior spokesman declined comment.

Coco Rocha/Elite New York. Here, Coco in a solo.
This past Friday, OTM tagged along as Coco Rocha and members of Eire Born, her Irish dance group from Canada treated over 200 students to an Irish dance performance. Brought to you by the Children’s Aid Society, this performance was enthusiastically received by the students, many who are dance enthusiasts who participate in after school dance programs with CAS. See Coco in action in the videos below. How much do we love a model who has a passion outside of modeling?

Coco, 2nd from left.

Coco and her students are “airborn”.

Signing autographs for her young fans.

Posing with some of the children, Coco is 4th from the left.
