the cover is amazing, i love the way her face looks, so defined, like on a painting...

but where is she in milan? i never get it when designers don't book her, the way she walks puts an edge into the most boring shows *coughburberrymissonicough*

Happy belated birthday to Coco! :buzz: This is so late but I was busy celebrating my own birthday last week, too. :D

Model shopper: Coco Rocha offers some tips on buying vintage items

NEW YORK — Model Coco Rocha is young - she just turned 20 - but her look is old.
When she's on her own time, the chameleon-like face of Phi, Barney's, YSL Beaute and Neiman Marcus ads, and the star of Fashion Week runways, wears vintage clothes.
Rocha grew up outside Vancouver, wearing a lot of hand-me-downs. "We never really went shopping for new clothing when I was little. It was always second-hands."
Her mother, a flight attendant, eventually turned Rocha on to things with a history. Her mother told her, she recalls, that a history makes things interesting and exciting.
As a kid, Rocha didn't always buy it, though. "I hated it when I was young. I only wanted new things."
These days, she prefers vintage clothes that are pretty, not sexy - perhaps even something Victorian.
For a shopping trip to Cheap Jack's Vintage Clothing in Manhattan, Rocha arrives in a previous purchase from the store: a loose off-white shift. She is all smiles and she's ready to spend a little money.
While she might be a regular at this store, she's by no means a compulsive shopper. "I have to be in the mood to shop because when I come in, I don't know where to start," she explains. "I always start simple - I like cute girlie dresses."
She also is a buff of old-school romantic movies. She could envision herself dressed like "Pride and Prejudice's" Lizzie or "Gone With the Wind's" Scarlett.
She shares her best vintage shopping tricks:
Winter clothes are the best buy, says Rocha, thanks to their rich, often long-wear materials and more elaborate embellishment. "I buy a piece I can wear a lot - like a jacket. A jacket that's special, you can wear it with haute couture, H & M or Urban Outfitters."
She loves the pageantry of 19th-century styles. Her favourite new piece, a green velvet jacket with a high collar, puffy shoulders, sequins and gold thread, is from the 1880s.
Find a good tailor you can trust with sometimes delicate materials. Rocha's favourite green jacket is currently in Asia, where her mother's flights go, in the hands of a talented seamstress.
Rocha says she accompanied her mother on a trip, left her measurements and now sends over with her mother any items that need alterations. It's a long way for a garment to go, she acknowledges, but vintage clothes have already had a long life and deserve to be treated well.
Designer labels don't impress Rocha. An "investment piece" should be one that makes you feel good, not something that cost a small fortune.
"It's a question of, 'Do you like my outfit?' and if I'm comfortable in something. I think it's being comfortable that has given me my presence," she says.
Most vintage clothes stores have items from many eras - and women's body types have certainly evolved and changed over time. Every item needs to be tried on, Rocha advises, and don't get hung up on the size on the label.
Rocha's hobby - and passion - is Irish step dancing and she says being a dancer has given her a more muscular build than some of her catwalk colleagues. It's not unusual for her to try on things that are too small. Pants, in particular, give her a problem because she is fairly tall at 5-foot-10.
Even her head is too big for the hats stylists bring on photo shoots. "They have to cut out the back ... and cutting a Balenciaga hat is not too popular."
Still, she likes the drama a hat brings to an outfit, so she'll keep trying them on in consignment shops until she finds the right fit.
There's no such thing as "trendy" in vintage shopping, so you can really look for items that suit your personality, Rocha says, such as her affinity for "Little House on the Prairie" pinafores and jumpers.
Her other obsession is capes. "I do wear capes whenever I can. We have to bring capes back - more people should be wearing them," she says.
As her shopping spree winds down, Rocha heads to the cashier with a black opera cape with metallic beads on the shoulders, a long button-front black coat and a white crepe minidress with matching coat - both with a ruffle at the hem.
The common thread through her choices, she says, is that she can't wait to wear each item: "I often get paid in clothes, so I don't need to buy so much. I only buy what I like." Canadian Press.com
