Apparently Posh is no longer the fashion icon for those who know their Prada from their Primark. A new war is being waged on the tabloid terraces and there's not a football in sight.
In the battle of the touchline totty, Wayne Rooney's other half is now the face to launch a thousand Top Shop sales. The PRs would have us believe that whatever Coleen McLoughlin wears launches a selling frenzy. Her appeal is put down to her girl-next-door looks and down-to-earth personality. And as Posh deflates before our eyes, Coleen provides a more filled out fantasy.
But while Posh had forged a career in girl power and Gucci, Coleen's only claim to fame is her love of Shrek-a-likes and shopping. For a generation of adolescents who want to be famous for being famous, she is the poster girl of the celebrity set. Readers of Now and Heat are more interested in the brand of her bags than her brain. She is the queen of consumption. We don't want to hear her speak, we just want to watch her spend.
if Such is her love of the label that her 20th birthday cake was decorated with bags from her favourite shops. Even The Sun called it the ultimate 'chav cake'. But Coleen seems to be having her cake and eating it. She's got her own column in The Sun, has made a fly-on-the-wall documentary and is already a millionaire in her own right. So let's see. Being an average looking, non-offensive Liverpudlian with no discernible talent can make you wads of cash. There are better odds on winning the lottery.
Maybe we're bored with the real stars of modelling, acting and overeating. Scrape away the barely discernable talent and all we really want to see is what they're wearing. Just look at the Oscars.
So perhaps society is not so bad for putting Coleen where she is. We've got sporting heroes to stir us off the sofa, literary heavyweights to get our brains engaged and songwriters to serenade us. So why not someone who is purely there to look good in a frock? And an affordable one at that.
