College age women and designer accessories

gifts. most of my nicer items (Balenciagas and whatever) were gift from my family. I'd rather get 1 big xmas gift than a bunch of smaller things. Also, I use my summer job money to buy one treat at the end of the summer. Keeps me motivated for school the next year :)

I think also what happens is that once you start buying these things for yourself while your parents may at first be shocked, once it becomes part of a pattern for you, your parents are more likely to buy them for you or put money towards something they once thought was ludicrous. This might just be unique to my family but I remember when Sevens first came out my mom absolutely refused to pay $220 for a pair of jeans so I bought my first pair myself. And the second pair. And the third pair she bought for me as my sort of 'fall wardrobe' gift. And now she wears Sevens so......I think that may play into it as well

I am a student im not rich by any means .. i dont sponge off my parents i work a part time job (20 hours a week :( ) and this money i save to purchase designer items... not much clothing though mostly assesories like scarfs, bags etc. I have 2 chloe bags, a chanel bag, a gucci bag and a balenciaga bag. i also have a few mcqueen skull scarfs (now pushed to back of walldrobe) i believe in buying good bags and jeans ... and i maybe have the odd designer top or something ive forgotten about.

The rate i go through clothes .. litterally were once if im lucky .. most of it unworn ... so i tend to just buy cheapo clothing .. then splurge on bags etc. and the odd designer piece.

Ive blown my whole months wages on a bag before ... and if that means its primark and h & m for the rest of the month then so be it.

I would love to be able to afford designer pieces but i simply cant afford that and a social life... so its getting the balance right.

I think when im older though and earning a half desent wage then i can spend more of designer clothing and ill apriciate it more.

I would hate for people to think im spoiled or carrying a fake though .... :(

I know alot of girls will buy clothing just for the brand name...so i guess alot of people will buy fakes.

I guess at 18 or whatever you are stil discovering your style and want to impress people hence the need for labels... and due to lack of funds .. fakes.

Precisely. Even at 23, I'm very concerned with finding that balance and also saving money in the mean time... I'm a frugal woman, and very aware of my finances. My biggest-priced purchase are my Chanel sunglasses, which, of course, I bought myself. :ninja:

I'm very strange with money. I buy designer if it's on clearance... or sale... but it has to be a crazy great deal for me to indulge. I wouldn't want my parents to spend money on something crazily expensive for me... they paid for college and housing, etc., and I'm very protective of their money. I would rather their hard-earned money on themselves. For years and years they saved and saved, and for about the last ten years were finally able to indulge and pay off their vehicles and build a home and pay immediately with cash. But really, they're pretty simple folks. :) But sometimes that's what I love about them... how they really enjoy the simpler things. I'll leave the designer purchases up to myself. ;)

^^^ im exsactly the same ... my parents hate me working and would rather just give me the money but i hate sponging off them. I get more satisfaction and respect stuff more by buying it myself.

:flower: karma for you .. that was a valid and really sweet point

- work? ;)
as a foreign language major student working as interpreter i can earn enough to buy designer bags
- rich parents
- nice boy-friend :p

At a school such as Duke or SMU, it's probably real. At a state school, usually not. I know that during sorority rush, handbags were discussed (among other things, think a very detailed synopsis of a girl from head to toe, with her photo projected on a screen in a room, basically : Jane Smith. Blonde hair, good skin, mole on upper left cheek, white lacoste polo, tory burch for hudson jeans, ck bradley belt, jp tods drivers, chloe padington bag in tobacco...) and fakes were ridiculed (this was a pretty cut throat school for rush). It really all just depends, but girls out for their MRS degree usually have real bags....they tend to care a bit more about such things.

LMAO
Sounds like bad prep style from yesteryear just with some designer labels added on

This semester, I've worn nothing but jeans to school - my first class of the day is yoga, and it's easier to change in and out of jeans & a tshirt in a cramped bathroom stall when I'm barely awake than it is to change out of a skirt.

Yet, my designer things are real - bought in person by me at high-end shops. My nails are painted with Chanel polish, that's never chipped. I always have a full makeup face on. My clothes are always clean, not wrinkled, and not torn.

My cousin wears slacks and tops every day - she works at a nice restaurant. She's always in heels with earrings and perfectly manicured nails.

Yet, her Louis Vuitton is fake - and a cheap fake at that, with the big fake label on the side and visible seams on a Speedy.

When I see someone with a bag, I try to think the best - but if it's a lousy fake.. Meh.

Can't edit my post anymore, but I forgot to add this..

How do I afford it? I design inner-company websites for the business my stepdad associates with. He designs pipes for an oil & gas company - these pipes run under the entire city of Houston. Yet, it's a big building, and employees were having to run these plans all over the building on paid company time - and several employees would slack off and SAY they were taking Plan A to so-and-so, when they were just jabbering on the phone to their friends. They were so desperate for another way to deliver these plans that I make a killing making these pages and keeping them up - and it doesn't infringe on my time much.

just using an example of labels that were commonly stated. Sorry to offend you.

and really, do you expect sorority girls to have edgy style? In the South? Not very likely...one or two maybe out of 200 per house...maybe.

Well isn't the whole point of sororities to conform? ;)

As we know, even Paris Hilton carries fakes ... I recently saw in one of my magazines some little starlet giving this fashion advice, to save $$$ by buying fake bags

But as several of you have pointed out, college students do often work, if not during the semester then during summer and Christmas breaks ... and that adds up to disposable income most of the time. That's how I bought my bags in college ... and they were never fake :innocent:

Right. I don't have rent, I don't drive so I don't have car insurance or gas costs (I just hate driving), etc. The only bills I get are my credit card & cell phone bills, which I can easily pay - so it's not hard to pay for my things.

The college that I attend right now is filled with kids from well off and rich families so I see designer things everywhere. I come from a well-off family as well and I'll admit, Daddy is a big benefactor in a lot of my purchases but I do have a sense of when is the limit. I won't go on thousand dollar shopping sprees weekly since money is indeed hard to come by and the idea of always shopping seems a bit silly.

Most of the designer bags I own are gifts from family...occasionally I borrow my mum's bags for posh dinners and such.

Over here a lot of college students tutor younger kids for money (odd phenomenon, I know) so I suppose that is how most of us have some spare cash for a few luxuries...?

I'm college age and it's just a matter of finding a few key pieces I really like and I'll get a lot of wear out of, and then saving my money wisely. I'm not the norm, though--I admit I'm guilty of assuming "daddy's money" of a lot of girls I see walking around campus, just because their choice of bag and other clothing doesn't indicate they have an honest enough interest in fashion to work, work, work and save. If that makes any sense.

It depends I think. Depends on (a) where you are (eg. I wouldn't be surprised if it's in London where many rich international students are), and (b) how you carry it off.
Sure, some college kids may wear tracksuits while carrying an "it" bag, but it depends how they carry themselves.

As well, I would go further to say that adults are just as likely to carry fakes as college kids are. I've seen many a fake Balenciagas and LVs on womens' arms. :innocent:

i agree, i live in the middle east and most parents here pay for everything their kids buy until they get married or work.
you can see alot of college age women here wearing real high end designers from head to toe and it's all from their parents, it's not a big deal.
