Comme des Garcons Collection Pictures from the 1990's

Thanks for the pictures:-)

I think VW did a similar looks in the mid 90s, when she pumped up the bumps:-) and pushed up the breasts. It looks like a sirens' silhouette, kind of visual interpretation of an extreme "femme fatal".

I do think that Rei did make it in a more abstract, less "sexual" level. She used the same gadget (the inserts) but the effects are diff. She changed shapes of everypart of the body, mixed the pads with other volumes and fabrics... It is more about body experimenting than, let's say bump up the behinds:-P

What an amazing show....it was an abstract idea for the human body, it was a bit ironic, shapeless bodies etc...really beautiful!
thanx nqth for bringing back all those memories!

Just found this (single) amazing pic in an issue of Graphis Photo from -89.

caption says:

"Photograph from from a large-sized catalog featuring the 1988 fall and winter collection of Comme des Garçons"
Photo: Minsei Tominaga
Art Director: Tsuguya Inoue

I'd love to see that catalog!

Actually, the development was sorta kinda simultaneous. Westwood began experimenting full blast with mini crini's and bustle skirts with 'Harris Tweed' in Fall '87 and 'Pagan I' in Spring '88. She seemed in her attempts to harken back to European historical costumes rather than trying to totally de-emphasize the body, turning form into function (Georgina Godley's work has been connected to surrealism). It wouldn't be a stretch to think Rei had come across Godwin's work at some point or maybe even the Jean Arp sculptures of the 30s that are an inspiring starting point.

"After extensive searching and thinking out for new ideas, just before time run out, I realised that the clothes could be the body and the body could be the clothes. This was an idea for possible new clothes. I then started to design the body. I didn't expect them to be easy garments to beworn everyday, but COMME des GARCONS clothes should be new to the world and inspiring. It is more important, I think, to translate thought into action rather than to worry about if one's clothes are worn in the end. This is probably why the collection stimulated strong feelings in many people."

i dont know about on the street but my friend said the shop staff at the Aoyama store wore the bumps in the store.

I have read somewhere that the bumps were removeable:-) There is a practical side in the madness indeed:-P

The stuff at CDG NYC boutigue wear all this crazy sh*t, too. It's the only place where they don't feel stupid wearing it.

i found this video on youtube...
it's AMAZING...it completely captures that early 90's scene...
love the hair and the models...
great movement...
it was posted by the director who wrote this...
I made this back in 92 when I was living in Paris. It was a film for a charity event to raise aids awareness. Nico Beyer made another of the films for Thierry Mugler but I haven't seen that since '92
would love to find the mugler one as well!!!

Hi, I'm new to tfs.com; but extremely glad to have found it! especially wanted to say thanks to Travolta and all the other picture posters in this thread; I've searching for some kind of CDG photo resource on the net for a while and this looks like the ideal place!
I'd like to add to the good work started here by posting some more pics from the CDG 1990 a/w collection.
All the photos come from Collezione and other fashion mags of the time.

your welcome, hypnos. apologies for the late reply.

thanks for the images! they are rare indeed...and you captured some detail that my wonky screencaps left out!
