Comme des Garçons has lately been setting down un-prettified, one-year-only, guerilla stores in off-the-beaten-path locations in cities around the globe (one outpost is in the pillar of a Warsaw bridge). The new practice defies the industry standard for selling goods in architecturally splendid emporiums — a concept pioneered in the '90s. Now, the label has transposed this "guerilla spirit" into a line of fragrances set to launch later this spring.
Despite the enticing initial whiff of the aptly named Guerilla 1 and Guerilla 2 perfumes, it's the label's high-concept packaging that first fully captures the attention. Inspired by the temporary pop-up stores, the androgynous scents' sleek, rectangular bottles are boxed along with a set of six artistically offbeat mock papier-mâchè canteens. Were it not for their red or black colors, they might be mistaken for miniature Matthew Barney sculptures.
For the premier fragrances from this "new series of perfumes based on the world of Comme des Garçons," the brand concocted a complex set of scents. The "strong rebel perfumes" are grounded in damp, earthy tonalities of vetiver and cedarwood, intensified by the carnal hint of musk; but the hybrid of piquant and exotic aromas is what distinguishes the perfumes from one another. Guerilla 1 enthusiastically pops with the smell of saffron and cloves, then quickly settles into an intoxicating dialogue between the sweetness of the champaca flower and the boldness of black pepper. Guerilla 2 parries with a zesty combination of pink pepper, ginger, and bergamot, then meanders into the brazen odors of red pepper and curcuma, mixed with the delicate aromas of a raspberry and tuberose bouquet.
Rebels, like the Comme des Garçons' mastermind Rei Kawakubo, have distinct and cultivated physical identities; but with the arrival of Guerilla 1 and 2, to be a revolutionary, one no longer has to look the part — for $98, one can simply smell the part.
