During the 1990s, anyone who came into even glancing contact with a fashion magazine, a designer's runway, a Calvin Klein billboard, a George Michael video, or a Maybelline commercial was probably well accustomed to seeing supermodel Christy Turlington all done up. But for Grace Burns, who is, after all, just a youngster, the vision of Turlington dressed for an evening out is a rare delight and cause for gasping approval: "Oooh, Mommy!"

"She's so used to seeing me in a pair of men's jeans, or my yoga clothes, that I get an 'Oooh, Mommy!' even when I wear something like this," Turlington says, pointing to her casual yoke-collared trapeze dress. "Though it's black, so it's not her favorite."

One can only imagine, then, how her daughter and her son, Finn, will react when Turlington heads out in her festive finery for the Nutcracker Family Benefit, a holiday-party fundraiser she's co-chairing for the New York City Ballet and the School of American Ballet. All the better that it's the ballet, which Grace has adored since she was 2. "I worried about whether she could sit through the performance—sometimes she doesn't sit through a Disney movie. But she was mesmerized," her mother recalls. "At the photo shoot [for Cookie], Grace loved being with the dancers so much that she didn't want me around. She kept saying, 'Goodbye, Mommy,' and dragging me offstage. I thought I had a few more years before she got sick of me. Though I've always said she was 13 when she was born."

Nonetheless, Turlington appreciates knowing she has a new, enthusiastic date for the arts. She wryly points out that—in keeping with the bait-and-switch tactics of husbands everywhere—director and actor Edward Burns used to join her at the opera "all the time—all the time!" when they were dating ... but hasn't gone once since they tied the knot in 2003.

The New York City Ballet is just one of Turlington's many causes—she's worked for tobacco-cessation campaigns for the American Lung Foundation (she herself struggled to quit smoking, and she lost her father, a longtime smoker, to lung cancer in 1997), Care, the One Foundation, and Project (RED), the latter two founded by one of her closest friends, Bono.

Contrary to many reports, the U2 frontman and activist did not give her away at her wedding. "He was there, of course, but I gave myself away. I mean, I was 25 weeks pregnant at the time," she says, acknowledging that her gown, designed by John Galliano, offered the relative disguise of an Empire waist. "Eddie met me halfway down the aisle." (At the reception, she recounts with bemused indignation, one of Burns's friends took him aside and said, "It's so nice that Christy got a boob job for you for a wedding gift.")

One of the things that drew the couple together was their shared love of New York City and all its culture, from the ballet at Lincoln Center to the little neighborhood playgrounds. They have a summerhouse in the Hamptons now, too—-a big step, Turlington says: "When I used to have shoots out there, I didn't care how late it was—I would always come back to the city."

They are also both extremely family-oriented, and count their siblings as their best friends. Holidays are especially convenient for the grandparents: In a kind of Pride and Prejudice twist, Turlington's older sister, Erin, is now married to Burns's younger brother, Brian, and they are expecting a baby boy (to join Erin's two boys from a previous marriage). "We can't wait to see him," Turlington says. "I'm so curious how this will work out genetically. Will he look exactly like my kids?"

In any case, this baby will be just the newest plus-one in the extended family's vacations together. "Everyone comes out and spends a month with us in the summer," Turlington says. A house that full of spouses, siblings, in-laws, and cousins, she reports, "is definitely a lot. But it's also a lot of fun."

thanks so much for the pics and article..i just adore her..

so lovely and sweet!
Maybe next time she'll get a VOGUE cover?

It's such a lovely cover, makes me want to buy the mag, even though I'm not a mom.

The cover looks so forced. :( I agree with the idea of Christy photographed by another magazine... Vogue US would suit her.

Why?:unsure:Its not like they are related.

can you imagine falling in love with a man and then having your sister fall in love with his brother?...
it's insane!...
out of ALL the people in the world...
i'm not saying it's a bad thing...just bizarre!....so your sister becomes your sister in law too..

you cant tell me you dont think that's weird.....
