Corey Baptiste: Italian Vogue Interview
Corey BaptisteThe black model has reached his goals really quickly, but he still has one dream: to be the new face for a Giorgio Armani global campaign
Corey Baptiste has accomplished a great deal in a very short time. From February 2010 until the present, he has sailed as a new male model of color and I am proud as pie to be there with a huge smile.
My interview with Corey was a pleasure and I was glad that I got a return call from his manager, Brandon Wilson.
When I first learned Corey had done the D&G menswear in Milan in January 2011, I said OK this is important. I had not seen race diversity in Dolce Gabbana or D&G menswear’s model cabine, so this was impressive. Seeing images of Corey I thought he was a handsome young man but it was still a big thing.
The interview was going well and then it became emotional for me. Corey re-enacted the runway show of D&G that he and model David Agbodji were two boys of color and they opened and closed the show. David opened, and Corey closed the runway presentation. You had to have been there but when Corey described to me the feeling of pride he had knowing that David and he, together added all they had to make that moment a true first, I knew that moment. As a former runway model myself, a model manager, a mother, but mostly an advocate trying to educate an industry just to open their eyes to the right model no matter the color, I thought and felt, finally. Two good looking black male models got their just due. But it was the way Corey described the moment. He’s a good story teller, and I felt the emotion come over me, pure happiness for them.
Corey has also modeled for DKNY, Richard Chai, Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, Michael Kors, G-Star, Tommy Hilfiger, Dolce Gabbana, Emilio Pucci, Missoni, John Galliano, Ralph Lauren and Hermes. That wasn’t every designer but it gives you an idea, of Corey’s momentum. Some of his magazine editorials are GQ Style Germany, Vogue Hommes Japan, NY Times Style, Wonderland Magazine. Campaigns include, DKNY Mens, DKNY Jeans, Benetton, TGNT, Yigal Azrouel, soon to come out Hermes Catalogue. British magazine CLIENT named Corey as one of the 100 Faces of 2011 and recently on Models.com top 50 Male models, Corey now ranks # 14.
It’s wonderful for Corey but more wonderful for the industry that there are wonderful competitive beautiful young black male models to now consider. Corey being one is a pure example.
