money with it but I wanted to do editorials. That more the Avant-Garde in the Netherlands.

From schoolgirl to supermodel in nine months thanks to a holiday snap?! It happened to the Frisian Doutzen (18). Ellegirl had a cup of coffee with her in New York.
Being a model was something she had always wanted, but Doutzen Kroes (18) thought it was arrogant to send pictures of herself to an agency. ‘I hoped someone from an agency would come up to me on the streets,’ she says ‘but there are no scouts in Friesland!’ So eventually she did send a couple of pictures to agency Paparazzi in Amsterdam. Life’s fast. Not much more then nine months later she sits in the lobby of the hip hotel Marcel in New York. Fashion Week is happening and Doutzen already walked ten shows. And she has posed for Victoria’s Secret. ‘It went so fast, it’s like a dream,’ Doutzen says while she’s drinking a cup of coffee, fast because –it’s 10 o’clock in the evening- she has a fitting after this. She just had her first assignments for Strictly, ELLEgirl and ELLE, when she received a phonecall on holiday in Spain; if she wanted to come to New York to do shows. ‘Of course I wanted to do that!’ Now she’s already a couple of weeks in Manhattan. She’s accompanied by Mo Karadag, her booker from her mother agency. He teaches her the tricks of the trade, which is necessary. ‘In the beginning I looked angry when walking shows, because I thought I was supposed to that. Mo taught me to think of calm things, like water and sailing.’ He makes sure she eats healthy (‘We go to a health food store’) and drags her to cool party’s: ‘Yesterday we were at the birthday party of Wyclef Jean. Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz were there too!’ But she’s also very lonely sometimes. ‘When Mo had to go back to the Netherlands, all I could do the first day was cry. Now I know the other girls in the appartment and it’s kind of cosy. It helps that I’m from Friesland: I’m very down to earth.’ Her boyfriend Eddy is the one she misses very much, although he thinks it’s great that she’s making it in New York. Her parents and little sister are very proud as well. ‘But my mum thinks it’s hard that it’s all about the looks in this trade. I told her that’s not true. Your personality is important as well. If you’re a b*tch, you can forget your career.’ It’s going to be very busy for Doutzen just a little bit longer: she has flights to Paris and Milan and has a shoot with the world famous photographer Gilles Bensimon for the American ELLE. Then she’s able to relax in the Frisian country. Mo thinks Doutzen’s going to be big. ‘She has an amazing body, beautiful hair and a symmetrical face. She can go very far.’ What she gets paid for all her beauty? Doutzen and Mo are very reluctant to discuss that. ‘It varies from 300 to 25.000 Euro’s a day… and sometimes even only a piece of clothing!’ according to Mo. The next evening Doutzen has a show for Tommy Hilfiger. On the beats of N*E*R*D she walks confident down the runway, while hundreds of fashion people and celebs are watching. Only we know what she’s thinking about: sailing on the Frisian lakes.
