Eind deze maand ga ik voor Dance 4 Life, een internationale organisatie die zich samen met jongeren inzet om de verspreiding van hiv en aids terug te dringen, naar Tanzania. We gaan jongeren bijbrengen dat safe seks een must is.”

„Zelf heb ik goede voorlichting gehad. Mijn moeder drukte me in een stoel en zei: ’Zo, ik ga je nu vertellen hoe het allemaal werkt.’ In het Fries, ja. Ik ben blij dat ze me heeft bijgepraat. Ik weet dat er veel ouders zijn die het onderwerp vermijden. Ik ben altijd voorzichtig geweest. Geslachtsziekten heb ik zelf nooit gehad en ik heb het ook niet in mijn vriendenkring meegemaakt. Ik moet er niet aan denken om iemand te verliezen aan aids.”

Of ze nu tijdens het Cannes Film Festival over de rode loper schrijdt of naar een feest gaat in haar woonplaats New York, overal verdringen de fotografen zich voor de beste plek om een mooi plaatje te schieten.
Met haar lange blonde lokken, glanzende huid en volle lippen is ze niet zonder reden een veelgevraagd model. Regelmatig is ze te zien in toonaangevende modebladen en schittert ze in diverse internationale reclamecampagnes. Daarbij is ze ambassadeur van het Franse cosmeticamerk L’Oréal en één van de Angels van de Amerikaanse lingerieketen Victoria’s Secret.
Een van haar krachten is dat Doutzen vele gezichten heeft. Voor Victoria’s Secret is ze sexy, voor de show van Björn Borg heeft ze zich gehesen in een sportief, stoer rood jurkje. „Zo zie ik mezelf ook. Ik ben een stoere Hollandse meid die zich het lekkerst voelt in een spijkerbroek, shirtje en ballerina’s. Maar in de glamourwereld voel ik me ook thuis. Trek ik een jurk aan en een paar hoge hakken, dan kan ik de wereld aan.”
De veelgevierde Doutzen heeft wel last van ’heimwee’. „Ik mis Nederland altijd. Behalve mijn familie en vrienden mis ik hoe we met elkaar omgaan, de taal, de humor. Ik houd van Hollandse humor. Ben ik over de grens en krijg ik een berichtje van iemand uit Nederland, dan lig ik vaak dubbel. Mijn gezelschap vraagt waar het over gaat, maar vaak kan ik de humor niet eens uitleggen.”
