Dance4life.com (found by lilso78)Doutzen Kroes inspired by her travels in Tanzania
03-09-2009
Doutzen Kroes, the new dance4life ambassador, returned from her trip to Tanzania on Monday. The 24 year old supermodel went to visit dance4life in schools and learn about the HIV problem in the country. dance4life empowers young people around the world to take action to halt the spread of HIV.
The Tanzanian newspaper The Guardian announced her arrival with an article entitled “Dutch anti-AIDS campaigner to visit Tanzania”. This shows the importance for Tanzanians that international attention is given to the HIV epidemic and that this is a reason for visiting their country.
During her trip Doutzen experienced different facets of the HIV epidemic. The highpoint of the trip was a visit to the high school which takes part in dance4life, in a village near Iringa called Kidamali. Doutzen joined the school youth in performing the international dance4life dance. She also took part in a life skills lesson, in which young people learn skills and information so that they can make the right choices for themselves, and learn about HIV and AIDS and how to protect themselves.
Doutzen talked at length with Richard, a young Tanzanian living with HIV. She asked him about what it’s like being a young man living with HIV and complimented him for being so open about his status. She ended up giving him a big hug! This meant a lot for Richard as there is still much ignorance in Tanzania about HIV and AIDS and talking about it, let alone hugging someone with it, is still a taboo.
Doutzen is really enthusiastic about her trip: “Last week in Tanzania I saw with my own eyes how dance4life engages young people. I am so excited having seen how effective dance4life is! It is fantastic to experience how the dance4life tour team visit schools inspiring young people with dance and a positive message to learn how to protect themselves and others from becoming HIV positive. I myself joined in with the dance4life dance and I talked with the young people for ages. I believe, just as dance4life, that young people are the positive virus against AIDS!”
On Monday 7th September a special report about Doutzen Kroes will be aired in the current affairs programme Netwerk, at 20.25 on the Dutch TV channel Nederland 2, including footage from her trip to Tanzania.
